Our shop has a Mazak X510 2500 watt laser,we have a job that requires discs made from lead, with an I.d. hole cut in the middle, the material thickness is .375. Has anyone cut this on their machine and what cutting conditions were used.

I don't think lasers like lead. Maybe a water jet?

I suspect, but do not know, that your laser will be able to cut lead. I would not use a laser though to put holes in lead. Lead is a cumulative poison in the body. Vaporizing lead will certainly be much more hazardous than melting or cutting the lead. Lead is so soft that I would first consider punching the hole out.

As was stated, lasers and leaed are poisonous. It is also hard to cut lead with heat without a serious edge effect that leads to poor quality. I would use cutting tools of one kind or another and collect the cooling/cutting fluid for complete recycle while remelting the lead "chips" for recovery. If you are sloppy with any of it, where ever you are becomes a superfund site that we will read about in the newspaper one day.

Probably not well or not at all because these machines usually involve Oxygen to burn the material. Aside from the health effects, I think it would be a messy outcome.

If done in a containment environment, a plasma torch would work.

Contact Flow International. They sell water jets.

Take it to a custom Water Jet cutting shop and get the job done. Accuracy is usually within .003-.005 sometimes even better. No vapors to kill your people and minimum contamination but not zero. If you take your drawing on a CD they may be able to use it as is. Check it out first. Good luck

easy cut, little mess, but small amount toxic fumes, however less than making one set of fishing sinkers, so over reaction to the fumes.

however logic tells me to get a shrp craft knife or chefs paring knife, as .375 thickness lead is as thick as a heavy piece of paper and will cut very easily, punch the holes. if it will not cut easily it is more than just lead,so laser it.

I don't know due to lack of symbol, but use of words "shop" and "plate", makes me suspect it's .375 inches - so ~9.5 mm thick.

Who knows, it may even be 0.375 meters thick. Nah that would be silly and heavy. I also got the same impression that this was 3/8 inches thick.

375 mm and pure lead. Now that would be a challenge. And what if the "Id hole" is like 0.1mm dia? Could be a job for the "Hardon" collider?
