Reducing Photo Size in Email

01/02/2011 12:18 AM

Hi all, I had an old version of Outlook which would give me an option to reduce photos to a send-able size and whilst I can put them through my graphics program to get the same result, it is not as convenient. I looked for the same thing in Outlook 2007 and I can't find it, can anyone help? Tony

Hi Tonymech,

I use paint to reduce photo size, and then save as a bmp, jpg or tif file. hope it helps.

Regards JD.

Thanks JD,

I use IrfanView to do the same, but the old Outlook used to do it as you dragged the photos into the email.

Good question and good answer.

I never understand why MS drops or hides some of the more useful functions whenever it "upgrades" to a new version. Seems like their UI designers are either disconnected from actual end users (reality) OR they think we enjoy wasting time solving confusing puzzles like "Which 4th level sub-menu is the least intuitive place to hide this function?".

If they left things alone and didn't hide stuff, how would you know you were using the "New" and "improved" version that just cost you $300.00USD?

Good point. However it is still obvious that you've installed an "improved" version because it usually eats up 2x-4x more hard drive space and now requires the newest multi-core processor and an extra GB or two of RAM to perform the same functions in the same amount of time the "old" version did. That MS can still demand (and get) top dollar for buggy bloatware is pretty amazing.

Thankfully, at least for nerdy engineering types like me, Linux variants and a huge library of open source programs have matured to the point where they can easily replace the costly buggy bloatware shoveled out by MS.

While I don't normally give GA's for having the ability to find an answer on the net, this answer is exactly to the point.

So, GA on ya woodygb.

jpgs are actually an algorithm... so all you need to do is save them several times, using mspaint... and they will get smaller each time (losing some quality of course)

the other thing I sometimes do is use paintshop pro 3, which I think you can download somewhere.. and reduce the number of colors to 256 with a dither, and then save as jpg again.

I use Microsoft Picture Manager as my default viewer, and that has a built in Compress Pictures under the Picture toolbar. It allows you to compress for Documents, Web pages or Email, and it can do all the pictures in a folder at once.
