Where do you position a take up pulley in the convey belt system?

The usual place is at the "tail" end of the conveyor, with the drive pulley being at the "head" end. However, there are many variations, such as "snub" rollers to increase the belt wrap around the drive pulley, and center drive conveyors.

To have the take up at the drive end is impractical, it would involve moving the whole drive assembly to take up slack. It can be done using shaft mount motor/gearboxes.
The tail end usually involves just 2 bearings on slides, which can also be used for tracking the belt.
A snub pulley at the drive end give the opportunity of increasing the drive traction.
It all comes down to "horses for courses"
