Direction of Pump Strainer

Dear All,,

Here v have pump strainer at inlet of our hsd dispatch pump. Some ammendments are required, what vl happen if v change direction of strainer. Already inlet is at left side, so if v change it to right. Vl there b any process problem here. its Y-Type strainer

Simply put Tornado's graphic description is correct.

Arrows show flow. If the flow is reversed the line will plug and flow will allow contaminants to the end device while eventually plugging the system up.

Oh, what an innovating way of putting the idea across! Great answer.

On to the question: I fully agree to what you and some others said. Best suggested direction could be from the outside to inside through the filtering element. Thereby the debris would stick to the outer surface. As philroth2252 indicated, "Many Y-strainers have been built to allow the strainer to be drained without the strainer being taken apart."

But as Stedou73ish said, "If the flow is reversed the line will plug and flow will allow contaminants to the end device while eventually plugging the system up", has no logic. If the solid contaminants are heavy, immaterial of the direction, it will chock the flow. When they were heavy contaminants, I have experience the difficulties of removing filtering element out of the strainer. On a big commissioning site, I've seen most have installed as suggested and few have installed otherwise. Those few intentionally installed so, expecting heavy debris to start with, after trial runs and clearing the debris, they reversed the strainer to suggested direction. During these trial runs, they reinforced the filter mesh with extra binding wires, without which the mesh would have blown up. On the normal run (direction) these meshes are supported by grilled/ perforated cans.

Thank you! I actually had to work at that a bit, because the text window "collapses" multiple spaces (making me insert the dots before the backslash depicting the strainer bucket).

if its y type strainer ,for bagage feasibilty direction recomanded by vendor is optional.

If the strainer is installed in the way that the manufacturer recommends, when it is unscrewed during maintenance all the crud that is has collected will come out with the basket.

If it's installed the wrong way round then the above might not happen.

Y strainers are designed to be installed in one direction only!!! Installing them in the wrong direction of flow will clog the flow of fluid and not allow the strainer to be cleaned out. What you are trying to strain would strain out would end up on the wrong side of the strainer. Many Y-strainers have been built to allow the strainer to be drained without the strainer being taken apart. Reversing the flow would defeat the design of the strainer. you can change the direction of ' Y' type strainer,but the pressure drop accross the strainer will higher in the reverse direction.

Why, pray tell, would you put a "y" type strainer back to to front........you defeat the whole purpose of it!!!!!

Yes, I agree, reversing is not advisable under normal circumstances. A flow from inside out through the filtering element would try to bust the mesh since it is not well support against bulging when get chocked partially or fully.

I do not recall anyone mentioning anything about non-return valves............sorry, just my warped sense of humour

Reversing a y-strainer is not as disastrous as reversing a NRV- Non Return Valve.

OK all it will do, possibly, is make you put your hand in your pocket for a new strainer, when you find you cannot take the strainer out to clean it.

Dear rajrao,

Despite what has been said there is only one way to fit the strainer... the water inlet must be presented to the inside of the basket. All the crud incapable of passing thru' the perforations will accumulate within the basket and when desired you will be able to easily remove the end cap/flange and extract basket and contents.

Now if you put the blasted thing in the other way round the crud will accumulate around the outside and, guess what, come the day when impoverished flow calls for investigation you will have the greatest difficulty in getting the damned thing out!

It seems so painfully obvious once you have experienced the hassle caused by some idiot putting it in the wrong way.

Hi Massey,

How true that is..........all one has to do is look and see how the "Y" type stainer is constructed to see the problems that it would cause, if it is inserted in the wrong way round

............and reputable manufacturers even put an arrow on it to indicate direction of flow.............after seeing some of these answers, I now know why!!!!!
