Glass Wool Insulation on Chilled and Hot Water Pipes

01/10/2011 10:56 AM

The specs call for 1 inch thick glass wool insulation with aluminum foil vapor barrier for chilled and hot water networks inside the building and 2 inches insulation with aluminum cladding for external above ground piping. For better adherence to pipes, would there be any issues if the insulation is applied with adhesive instead of just using aluminum tape to close the openings?

Getting it off again might be more problematic.

It might not matter for fiberglass, but rigid foam expands/contracts differently from pipe, and thus should not be adhered to the pipe.

Install as per the manufacturers specification. You could be taking on the liability of the maker if you do it your way. You could ask for their approval for the installation.

No. Use of adhesive is not recommended. Moreover, glasswool is loose, it will not sick totally.

Now a days for this application, formed PUF insulation is more preferred due to ease in installation and better performance.
