Some people should not select this as a profession.

It depends on personal experience, values and preferences.

Think about why you have needed to ask. What motivates your heart? Most of these people are living the life they love every day. We like it so much we answer questions without any thought of our time or effort. We even read others answers to learn about what we do not know. Our question is not why but why not?

Being a graduate EE, I know most MEs end up in mechanical because they flunked out of electrical. Heh heh.

Seriously, for the most part engineering is engineering and the same rules apply to all. For example, mechanical stress is the same as electrical stress even though it may be expressed in different units.

It turns out, with few exceptions, the primary value of an engineering degree (regardless of major) is to get your foot in the door with an employer. Once that happens, one has to do the job regardless of what it says on your diploma.

In my opinion, nobody is an engineer out of college. You acquire the education, get your degree or diploma then go out and learn how to be an engineer. Some of the most creative engineers with whom I've had the privilege of working over the years never had a formal degree or diploma but they were highly successful engineers and a credit to the profession.
