Software Needed

01/14/2011 11:30 PM

Hi All

For vision impaired people we need software that will translate digital info coming from a Davis Instruments model 6250 Weather station to Voice, to enable the blind to listen to the weather instead of seeing it over the LC-Display the station comes with.

We have some more requirements that we will be happy to give you if you think you can do it, and if the price you ask for it will be within reach for us.

You can see the basic station specs here:

http://www.davisnet.com/product_documents/weather/spec_sheets/6250_6351_57_SS.pdf

We will need only a small portion of the available info information to be translated, and as I said before will supply all the info needed for the job.

Anyone interested in doing it? or better, are you aware of an existing software that can be used for the job?

All comments welcome!

Digital data is mostly transmitted in a very structured way. Most people with slight IT experience would be able to help you.

I would suggest you approach the IT teacher at your local school to make it a homework project. (for some credits or pocket money)

If you need more help - contact me on PM.

I think it will be better realizing on OneChip Microcontroller (Atmel for example). And not an IT teacher fit to this work.

Q. What is hardware platform for Project?

Hi Wanqito, I think platforms for building this system may be: 1. Personal computer (PC or Mac) as Hardware (~$500), Special Program working under MS DOS, MS Windows, MacOS or iOS as Software (~$500 depends of funcionality). Programmers are usially busy and their working time cost aprox. $100 per hour. 2. Atmel ATMega microcontroller with additional electronics as Hardware (~$50) Special Program for It ($1000). In this case System programmer and Electronics engineer are needed. Microcontrollers are chips that you can see in almost all domestic devices. For exaple, talking clocks. You don`t need to use speech syntesizer. Program can speak previosly writed in memory words: "Wind", "Speed", "Temperature", "One","Two", etc. 3. You can make Internet Radio Station with Weather Info Broadcasting. Interested people can hear it on mobile devices via Internet. 4. People can hear such Info on the Radio in Air Band. (I use my Grundig Satellit 750. Nearliest Airport talk about Weather conditions). Thanks (Sorry for my English, I'm Russian)

You may want to explore the Orca project, or software such as Jaws for the Windows world. These "screen readers" may not meet your specific goals or requirements for your project, but should help you get a feel for what others are doing in the accessibility community.
