WOW! Here in the states we don't have built in safety devices in all of our receptacles but we do use ill fitting safety covers as well. scary info.

It makes the installation of 32A/30mA RCBOs an attractive proposition. Good ol' BS7671!

In Indian railways when we use our cell phone chargers (manufactured for different parts of the world)facing problem with this standard. We don't have a third pin as there is no need of earth connection for the charger/adapter.So the shutter of socket won't open with 2 pin plug. That forces some impatient persons to break those arrangement causing damage of charging point.

I know we shouldn't advocate products but I think on this count I can get away with it. MK's Logic Plus sockets don't use the earth pin to open the power shutters but instead a cam system that needs even pressure on each pin. Even for someone who knows how they work they are a swine to defeat.

Other than using a pilot system I've never come across safer.

When my son was due to be born my then wife got down right nasty with me when she arrived home with covers for sockets and I threw them straight in the bin!

Thanks for this Tony. I didn't fit covers when my son was young because they just didn't seem like a good idea, but, I always had a slight guilty feeling about it. Now I feel exonerated.
