Car Starting Problem - 1999 Jetta

01/19/2011 12:56 AM

So the other day I was driving my 1999 Jetta and it stalled in the middle of the highway. And it wouldn't start, although the engine would crank. The mechanic said that the air intake tube was leaking and so the air supply to the engine was cut off. I wasn't entirely convinced by that but the car worked. I drove well enough for a day. The next day, though, it wouldn't start again. If it's at all relevant, when it first stalled, I was driving in a blizzard. And then the next time it wouldn't start it was also after another snow storm. So any ideas what the problem might be? Thank you

If conditions are just right (or wrong), moisture in the air can freeze just at or after the intake to the engine, thereby choking off the flow. I suspect this is more likely with a carburetor system. Your blizzard might have created this condition, which could thaw out after sitting still briefly, and then return. Such a come-and-go problem can be hard to trouble-shoot.

I had the same problem due to the intake plugging off with snow.

I removed part of the tube between the outside intake and the filter and wa-law,

no more problem.

I had a Rabbit and a Jetta. Both had fuel and electrical problems. The Rabbit electrical fuel pump was intermittent and finally failed. The Jetta fuel injectors occasionally would stop working. Not sure why, but had to be replaced. Never had intake problems however.

Check your fuel pressure! Sounds like a fuel pump/pressure issue to me.

If the air tube was off between the air sensor and the throtle body the computer can not measure the air to fuel ratio, and thus will not let the car start or run. Found this on a friends mazda 626, and a girl friends taurus. In both cases the tube just came loose and all I had to do was reinstall the tube. On one car a friend was having troudle with his was torn and temporaly fixed with electrical tape it got him going for a few more months until a new air tube could be located for a permanent repair.

The problem is the sensor of injector that have to be ACTIVE till the car reach 30 Degree C=at cold wether when the car cold it is BYPASS the Fuel system to give the FUEL.

Mechanics has a problem to find it BECAUSE it is working in NEGATIVE LOGIC=have to be active ONLY before reach about 30DEG C

GOOD LUCK= daveross100@gmail.com

The car has a snow screen in air cleaner box this can plug usually from debris and snow.

I had the same problem with my '94 Jetta. I was working on the car and decided to clean things up a bit. Off came the intake to the headers, cleaned up and viola... the car wouldn't start. I reviewed all of the parts that came off and missed sliding on the one that is stuck under the plenum in the back near the firewall..... that's when I noticed that it was torn and wouldn't stay on. So I pulled out the electrical tape and 'fixed' it and it ran like a top for another 120,000km that way.

If the air intake has a MAF sensor this could prevent the engine from starting make sure you have no leaks in your intake system. This would also set a code take it and have the code read and it will help you isolate this issue. Good luck
