Best Battery Type For UPS in High Temperature Applications

01/21/2011 6:44 PM

Hello

I am looking into UPS for back up power. i have been told that all battery types have the same shortened life rate the hotter the environment. HEre is chart depicting batttery life as a function of temperature: (battery type VRLA lead acid battery)

Are there other battery types with better temperature response?

We are trying to get back up power for PLC and instruments (around 6kVA) in high room temperature environments.

Any ideas/references welcome

Probably overkill for your application, here is a link to one high-temperature battery type...

I sent John McCain my new invention battery material when he offered 3 million

dollars prize to the winning Battery idea. Maybe he would have a bigger list

than just my onion skin Bladder Battery that expands and contracts to save

weight and space.ds

i think you need to qualify , what is the" High" temperature. Secondly is the temperature high at all the time in a day? Further what wattage and voltage of the unit you are looking for?

I am talking about temperatures of 60 C during the day and for most of the year (8-9 months)

How about putting the batteries in an adjacent but separate room, and ventilating or air-conditioning the battery room? Ventilation is needed, anyway.

That was my thought too. Relocate to a friendlier place. Insulated container?

Vented Cell batteries are going to have a different temp vs. life curve than VRLA's. But they usually require more physical space. VRLA's are suited for smaller areas and rougher environments in general, but they never last very long and they are not maintenance free as advertised (nothing is maintenance free). But their usual life is around 5 years in a good environment. My advice is to look at different battery types (vented vs. sealed, lead acid vs. nickle cadmium maybe) and what types are suited best for specific environments. All of this info would be available from any manufacturer. If you really want an expert's opinion you should contact Marco Migliaro at ESA Consulting Engineers (esaconsulting.com) or google it. He's a good friend of mine but I don't have his contact info at hand. Tell him you were blogging with Kelly O. and that I mentioned you should contact him. Good luck.

The best Battery? China owns the USA licensed patent. We have no clue how the batteries are made. Do you know Mandarin?

High temperature applications, the suitable battery is not conventional VRLA batteries. Use flooded tubular instead. Further option is Tubular Gel battery. Depending of location , Duty cycle and console space and quality, back up facility, access , the correct application of the battery is to be decided. A manufacturer having facilities to make all of these are better placed to offer suitable types on "site specific" applications. Many applications have extreme climates. Some have only back up DG set only. Some are with heavy discharge and some are with light discharge. Also users can give some better information in battery selection.
