Hidden Short

01/21/2011 9:22 PM

today i had a motor and it read 1000kmegohms w/ a megger and the motor leads were not going to ground norwere the load leads going to the motor from my starter. main line leads had good power and the motor shaft was not locked up or in any bind. so i throw the switch and POP it blows all three fuses on the line side, i assume bad motor but no test i do can tell whats wrong w/ it. is there some piece of test equipment that i need? anyways i changed motor and the sysem worked again.

One thing that it might be is a winding-to-winding fault that doesn't touch ground, but nonetheless shorts across a portion of the winding. A line-to-ground megger test won't catch this, but a line-to-line resistance check could pick up significant differences among the three low resistances. For instance, readings of 1, 4, and 4 ohms would point to a short in the 1-ohm winding. Motors can sometimes be rewound for less cost than a new motor.

isolate each winding by separating the wires check for a short between them.

Check also that the fuses are "motor rated" and compatible with the motor's full load current on its rating plate. Check also that an overload trip device is in-circuit and correctly set to the motor's full load current. Check also that the cable downstream of the fuses is up to the job in terms of the local electrical code.
