Depth of Penetration Measurement for Flair Bevel Welds

Hi all,

I am interested to learn whether anyone knows of a defined methodology for the measurement of a PJP, Flair-bevel groove weld where the surfaces to be joined are skewed? For example, imagine a condition where one surface plane is positioned in the horizontal position(from a cross sectional view). Now imagine where the part being joined is tilted upwards approximately 45°. The point of fusion at the joint interface is obvious. What is not is the point to be measured up to, from the root.

I would like to know what method is correct and by what standard? If there is not one available, then which method makes most sense from a designed strength standpoint. We and our customers are having some disagreement about this. I hope to make a case for which is correct by way of specification or Code; or by a joint strength argument.

Your terminology is unfamiliar. In particular, a "skewed" joint would intersect for only a brief space at most. If you send me a PM, I can give you an email address that accepts attachments, and then I can try to decipher this.

Me thinks the test is a destructive test. You would need to qualify this joint, and the welder, by doing samples and having them cut. This is the only way I know you can determine the depth of the root in full penetration weld

You are correct. The question is where exactly are the points of measurement taken. The photos would be so much more helpful. Unfortunately I can find no way to post them on here. Tornaodo suggested another way but I wasn't sure I understood his abreviation.

i agree. a testing lab might be able to give you a more definative answer. x-raying the weld might be the way to go. portable equipment is available. it can be used at the job site or at the shop. most federal jobs require it.
