Hi

Is Linear heat sensing cable a instrumentation cable?

Probably. Does it matter?

Please explain "linear heat sensing cable." This is a new term to me, and doesn't seem to make much sense.

Liner Heat Sensing cable or in short LHS Cable is used for early detection of fire in confined places like Cable Tunnels, Above False Ceiling, Below false floor etc. They sense the rising heat in thier surroundings and gives the signal to FDAP - Fire Detecion Alarm Panel which will be monitored in a control room.

They are basically twisted pair cables with heat sensing element inside.

LHS cables are a part of Fire detection System (FDA System) and work along with Smoke Detectors, Annunciators, MCPs- Manual Call points, Fire Detction Control Panel, Siren, Auto Dialers etc.

GA. It's always good to learn something new.

I would strongly suggest that Linear Heat Sensing cable is not instrument cable but really a power cable. The principle of LHS is 2 insulated wires, with the insulation designed to fail and melt at a prescribed temperature. When the insulation disappears the 2 wires contact and close the circuit to generate an alarm. The "temperature sensing" function is more on the outside than the inner and there is no special temperature sensor inside. It is probably more aptly named as Linear Short Circuit cable.

On the 'business end' of a gas- or oil-fired boiler, the 'heat sensing cable' is actually a piece of sisal string configured so that, in the event of the flame coming out of the burner, the string burns through, dropping the return weight and shutting-off the inlet valve.

So it depends upon context, really, which is something that cannot be given in one sentence.
