There are many electrical items that are not so much calculated as looked up in tables by various categories. Sometimes the formulas are too complicated for everyone to calculate, or they may depend on too many parameters (wet/dry, indoor/outdoor, number of conductors and how close to each other, type of appliance, etc.) And possibly the table entries have been determined by testing and measurement rather than calculation, anyway.
