Microsoft Exchange

02/10/2011 12:12 PM

Hey guys (and girls), got a dumb question here.

As you all know, I am mostly a hardware guy. Well, I was asked today how to tell what version of Microsoft Exchange was used to send an e-mail to my inbox. My e-mail is a Hotmail account.

So, my question is, is there a simple way to tell, based solely upon an e-mail in your inbox?

You might find information if you view all the email headers in the email. If your email client provides a means to do so, view source.

If your email client is a webmail client, you might not be able to do that. (Do you send and receive email using your web browser?)

If so, you might have whoever sent you that email send one to a person with a traditional email client where you can view the source (and thus review all the headers).

I send and receive e-mail from Hotmail within IE9, which does not seem to have any provisions for either reading full headers or viewing the source. Any other ideas? Please?

Hi DrMoose,

In the header area of the hotmail email, right click to get a drop-down menu.

I just tried it and got View Source and View Info.

Hey Mikey, love the new avatar.

I tried what you suggested and I saw "View Source" but, when I clicked on it I got 334 lines of code. I didn't see anything that said "View Info". Is what I'm looking for somewhere in those 334 lines?

The bottom two entries in my dropdown menu are View Page Source and View Page Info. BUT, I am using FireFox!

When I tried with IE, I see what you mean: there is no View Info. In Firefox, there is more info on the View Info pane, but I don't know if it will give you what you need.

Wish I could be more help.

Good luck,

Mike

Re: Is what I'm looking for somewhere in those 334 lines?

Probably. Someone else's response reminded me that the header you're looking for is (probably) the X-Mailer: header, so try looking for that. I don't know if it will tell you the version of Microsoft Exchange used to create the email, it depends on how proud Microsoft is. ;-)

If it's not in the X-Mailer header, it might be in some other header. BTW, iirc, the X-Mailer header is optional / extra (iirc, that's what the X means), so all email clients might not generate it.

Depending on your setup, you might be able to pick File|Properties and get the info you wish.

If it's any kind of help ...

I use Outlook, and usually send myself blind copies so that I can easily check what I sent from other PCs.

I looked at one I sent/received today - found the header info by using right click -> options...

Towards the end I found this line:

X-Mailer: Microsoft Office Outlook 11

... so the chances are that A) there's a way you can examine the header info, and B) what you want to know is buried in it somewhere.

Okay, all I am trying to do is determine, based upon the message in my Hotmail inbox in IE9, is what version of Microsoft Exchange was used to send the message. Is this possible?

It's listed in the data when you selected "View Source" before the HTML code

I use "classic view", so I cannot verify this ( source: http://8help.osu.edu/34140.html )

How to Show Full Headers in Windows Live Hotmail

The following instructions are for displaying and forwarding the full headers of a message using a Hotmail account:

  1. Log into your Hotmail account.
  2. Right click the message and select View Source.

NOTE: You must be using the Full Version of Hotmail. This will not work while in the Classic view.

I played around a bit in the classic. I found that when I was looking at a message in question I would see a small drop-down arrow next to "reply" - and if I clicked the arrow, one of the choices was "View Message Source" ... and yes, I saw the headers just like I do when using Outhouse Express when using Ctrl+F3
