How to Calculate Output Torque?

02/11/2011 11:42 AM

I have a 15 HP motor running at 1200 rpm consuming 20 Amps at 430 volts. There is speed reduction of 1.75 times in pulleys and speed reduction 0f 15 times in reduction gear box. With these parameters what would be the torque in Newton Meters at the output shaft in gearbox?

The answers aren't in the back of the text book?

It is the load's characteristics that determine the torque, not the motor's.

The answer is 42! (cue the musicians)

I leave the analysis to the student.

Ah-Ha! The answer is 42, but what is the question?

What do you get if you multiply six by nine? I just love that movie!

Read the books, they're so much better. I miss his humour.

Marvin!

You've got a lot to answer for! I always thought the answer was 47 but I can't remember the question. We need a CR4 DeeperThought computer.

I dread to think of the consequences if it were programmed by CR4 members! And would Deep Thought have got a GA?

Chaos theory is well established, we now need quantum chaos!

Aproxmatly 532 N-m

i hope you can get this by formula t=(KW X 60000)/(2pie X rpm)

reduction 1.75times as 1.75% 15times as 15%

That might be the maximum torque that the motor could offer.

The load torque will be less than this, otherwise the motor will stall. And when the motor is turning the load, it is still the load that determines the torque, not the motor!

You're absolutely right.

He does give us a bit of a clue with consumption 20 amps at 430v. Making assumptions regarding motor efficiency, etc. would that give us about 350 Nm ?

Re: How to Calculate Output Torque?

Well,

assuming it's a 60Hz supply on a 6 pole motor

assuming it's a 430V motor

assuming i's a 3 phase supply that's balanced

assuming that the belt reduction is 100% efficient (v, flat, toothed very different....)

assuming the gearbox is 100% efficient (helical or worm very different or ?...)

assuming that 20A is the flc at this voltage and frequency

assuming it's really 1200rpm (synchronous speed, no slip?)

approximately 2297Nm absorbed at gearbox output shaft (why Nm not lbft as motor in HP?)

I assume this may help, many thanks for your precise question and information that led me to this conclusion

Just out of sheer curiosity, why do you need this information, I realise this may be a stupid or irrelevant question (apologies)

Is this the answer you were looking for?

Re: How to Calculate Output Torque?

I am looking for this answer cause I need to replace the set of helical gear box, v-belt pulley and the 3 phase induction motor with a high torque direct drive motor with a thrust bearing. Hence I needed to find out the final torque at the out put shaft of the helical gear box.

Thanks for your answers..

Thank You Florence, your answer is good. The current frequency is 50Hz

If the frequency is 50 Hz, how is the motor running ar 1200 rpm?

By having a stator/rotor pole ratio of 2/5. (Or did I invert that again?)
