Kinney Vacuum Pump Not Building Vacuum

02/14/2011 1:17 PM

We have a Kinney Vacuum Pump not building vacuum; after checking, we realised a defective mech. seal. After it's replacement, and checks on the lobe clearances, all being within acceptable limits,it would still not build vacuum. Pls. what can be the problem?

how was the new seal integrity?

The valves are also possible wear points.

Another possibility would be leaks in the vacuum piping system, which could be audible if the surroundings aren't too noisy.

Today i found similar problem with my Kinny KTC60 and Booster combination. When I reached about 30 mtor, the vacuum suddenly droped to atm. pressure. Found the shaft seal damaged. Secondly I was using an air intake valve ( automatic) between booster and backing to avoid oil suck back in the event of sudden stopage of pumps- in case of power failure. I found that valve was also leaking.

Repaired temperory by providing an oil seal ( insted of a carbun mechanical seal) and blanked the aotomatic air intake valve.

Now the system is working OK. But need to replace the oils seal and air intake valve shortly.

Is it possible to see the schematic diagram of your system? And the model number of pump?

There could be mechanical issues as you have been evaluating, but it could be that the pump is undersized for the system load. How was the required capacity determined? It is possible that the in-leakage of the plant or outgassing of the process is enough beyond the capacity of the pump that it does not move enough gas out to show a vacuum. Suggest you do some tests. How does the theoretical pump curve for the machine compare with the actual performance as measured, i.e. flow, suction/discharge pressures, and power draw on the motor? Such tests should only be done using calibrated gauges so that you can trust the readings.

What advice has Kinney given you?

We operate more than 10 Kinney vacuum pumps so we have some experience with Kinney pumps. However, you not state what model the pump is, if it a booster or backing pump, the pressure you were getting when new and after you refurbished the pump. From what you state, it appears to be a booster pump. also, any other operational information will be helpful. Also, how are you reading the pressure and where are you taking the pressure readings. Please advise.

This could be due to inlet port excessive degasing, leak from seals or connections, internal leak etc. Try to blank off the suction and measure blank off vacuum. If you have fecility to do the healium leak test , it will identify any leak. Secondly, you are using a lobe pump, that means it is booster. Then you must use a backing pump for booster. If you can provide the model number of pumps - it will be better.
