Concentrated Nitric Acid (98% or greater) Storage Tank Specificatons

02/15/2011 9:11 PM

What construction material is recommended? I understand that (1) high purity aluminum (no Cu or Zn) or (2) high silicon (5%) stainless steel. are preferred! Also, please provide tank manufacturers, preferably in US! Thank you George Cross

If the tank is safe from mechanical damage, and not too large, some plastics might also work.

Thank you Tornado, the tank size is for 400 tons 98% nitric acid (64,000 gallon tank). Thanks for your input!

Whoa, Nellie, I don't know of any plastic tanks that big, but you might be able to line a tank of cheaper metal than SS or "fancy" aluminum. (Or maybe a few smaller tanks.)

I'd say this will take more than one tank.

Thank you for your response - good point! Our current producer/supplier has two 125-ton capacity tanks, 13-feet high (for portability).

For inherent safety, investigate why such a big tank is being considered, and take steps to modify the process and operation so as to reduce inventory.

I know this is an old post, but do you remember where you got this chart? Thanks!

Plastics, plastics, plastics.

See the Cole-Parmer materials compatibility database for an exact fit.

An interesting discussion regarding difficulties encountered in periodic inspection of an aluminum tank used for nitric acid storage:

Simple. Phone the supplier of the <...Concentrated Nitric Acid (98% or greater)...> and ask. Build a relationship and maintain a dialogue over time.

The final installation will be subject to that organisation's inspection and acceptance, if deemed suitable. The supplier has a vested interest in that, for it only takes one mishap for that body to refuse to supply any longer.
