Alternatives to Hipot Testing

02/15/2011 9:53 PM

I would like more info on alternatives to conventional hipot testing of medium and high voltage power cables. In particular, some poor jointing caused hipots to fail. After the joint was repaired it is not possible to retest at full voltage. Is there a non-destructive alternative that is practical in the field?

it s mandatory to test the cables after joints has been done. As you said, "After the joint was repaired it is not possible to retest at full voltage" then how could you use it in rated voltage. So its better to check it with 160% of rated voltage for 3 min to make sure the cable is OK.

The purpose of a test under controlled conditions is to ensure that, when the item is exposed to similar conditions in an uncontrolled way, it behaves exactly the same as in the test with a high degree of probability.

So, under what conditions is it possible to carry out a test on a high potential cable without applying a controlled high potential to it?
