Hot of Cold ?

02/20/2011 7:32 AM

On the one hand we have global warming and rising sea levels. On other, we have situations such as Yellowstone blowing and producing a 'nuclear winter'. Raging ice caps etc. Any thoughts?

In the eventuality that the interweb doesn't collapse next week, I'll call back to read any views. I'm actually getting quite comfortable in the dog-house after having forgotten the 14th, but I'm, sure somebody will benefit from general opinion on this topic (world's end, not me in dog-house).

If anybody has design plans for a dog house with aluminium (I think that's 'alumina' in Amerispeak) roof + flotation tanks, I's be quite pleased to hear.

Oh, well, it's Sunday. Gotta have another sniffter before facing the MIL for Sunday lunch. Please send all answers before 2012.

Which is why it's more commonly referred to as climate change---some regions will be warmer, some colder, some drier, some wetter.

Your doghouse would be aluminum in Amerispeak (since alumina is aluminum oxide; why do you need that extra 'i' in aluminium, anyway?)

Your lunch would be more enjoyable if you shared that snifter with MIL. Oh, give her her own snifter; 2012 isn't that far away.

Maybe the extra "i" is so that it can go along with molybdenium and tantalium?

humorous (two u's, whether in Limey or Yankee.)

(Except if you do the Limey really right, it's humourous = 3 u's)

With good multi-tasking, one can achieve both (at least sometimes).

...with bad multitasking you dissolve different words into a nice but meaningless weave.

I can go on forever, or as a friend of mine said once: 'Your grammar is so exquisite I couldn't understand whole sentences'

Climate change has been occuring for 4 billion years. We will adapt to moderate changes for tens of thousands of years. As for a dog house with aluminium, I recommend getting a party barge.

Yes, it has been occurring for billions of years. This time we are causing it. You're correct that we will adapt as this climate change plays out. What bothers me is the people on both extremes of this debate (not you, Ace) who deny that this is happening at all or who believe that we must immediately stop greenhouse gas production or the planet is doomed. Both are complete folly. We have the luxury right now of seeing a very slow but really unstoppable change in this planet coming. Hysteria from either camp helps no one.

"Hysteria from either camp helps no one."

Not true. If you are trying to seize more power over people, hysteria is an outstanding tool.

Re: Hot of Cold ?

The ever so questionable are we at fault or not climate issue.

I for one tend to find far too much of the data and information to still be more questionable than to be solid evidence or proof of anything. There are far too many variables and too many examples in the recorded history and mor recent geological history that still don't explain what is happening if anything well enough to point the finger solely at ourselves.

That for me alone is enough to make me highly questionable of any government, political, private, scientific, or other self vested interest groups studies to believe that anything they say to be more than 50% true at best let alone to try and pinpoint which parts of their collective data are the 50% true parts at that.

Then there is the whole other aspect of climate change that so very few ever discus in public such as the large number of gains that a warmer planet has to offer and the vast number of gains most people in most places will see from positive temperature related changes in their climate.

I for one openly welcome an increase in planetary temperature and the related climate changes and will do my part to continue to push the theoretical change in favor of warmer rather than colder. I doubt my efforts will make the least bit of difference in an overall gain but still as long as they say what we do influences it I will continue to try and do my best to go above and beyond in doing what I can to influence those changes.

Perhaps that's how we halt or even reverse global warming - stimulate an artifical vast volcanic eruption*, increase the level of fine particulates in the upper atmosphere and thus cool the earth.

More importantly, think of all those lovely Turneresque sunset we'd get...lovely.

*With prior warning to all travel companies, so planes can be grounded in advance and alternative people movement planned.
