Piping : Rf Pad Thickness Calculation

Hai..
I am new to this forum. So let me introduce myself. I am richard, working as piping materials engineer.
I have a query regarding the reinforcement pad thickness calculation.
As per ASME B 31.3 (2004 edition), section 304.3.3 Reinforcement of Welded Branch Connections, the diagram for RF Pad thickness calculation has shown notations like tb, th,Tb,Th, C, Mill tolerance etc..
Now Tb or Th refers to the tmin which is the minimum pipe thickness of branch and header respectively which is required.
When mill tolerance is added to Tb we get Nominal pipe thickness.

Now my question is, as per my knowledge, the ' tb or th ' shown in the diagram is the thickness calculated by considering the internal pressure only.
And 'tb or th' + 'corrossion allowance' gives minimum pipe thickness, which is called Tb or tmin, what ever it is.. Now tell me what does the 'gap thickness' present in diagram between 'th or tb' and 'C' refers to? (also mentioned as area A2 & A3 in diagram).

It has been too long since I have seen the picture, but two of the areas in question represent the surplus material available in the branch and header pipe thicknesses after pressure and corrosion have been accounted for.

It is the thickness that is part of the participating area as reinforcement from the header or from the branch, if this thickness is to small you will need a thicker reinforcement pad, but if is thick, it helps you to have a thinner reinforcement pad in order to recover the structural strength on the header pipe after you make the hole for the branch.

These gaps are considered the areas (A2 & A3) of reinforcing (located at run & branch) required to compensate the area of weakness (A1) occurred due to opening the branch, upon which we decide to add a reinforcing pad (A4) or not, where A2 + A3 + A4 ≥ A1.

And those areas A2 and A3 are created due to selecting the adopted pipe wall thickness (the next greater commercial wall thickness to match the standard Schedule No. found from Table 2 of ASME B36.10M) of both run and branch other than those min. thickness, corrosion allowance and pipe mill tolerance.
