To minimize or avoid upward percolation of water/vapor in the downcomer.

Dear Guest,

For NATURAL CIRCULATION of water inside the boiler DENSITY DIFFRENCE between hot and cold zone PLAYS A VITAL ROLE and is essential, which is decided by GRASHOF NUMBER (like Reynold's Number) and upto 1200 psi or 83.9 Kg/cm^2 this density difference takes care. Beyond this pressure NATURAL CIRCULATION becomes a problem and FORCED CIRCULATION is to be made by pumps.

So Water circulation is taking place on account of the difference in density of water in side the boiler, for natural circulation which is calling for keeping the down comer in the relatively colder zone or outside the boiler

Then only THE DENSITY DIFFERENCE will be maintained or else the density difference will come down and affect the circulation of water inside the tube.
