Transformers are not supposed to be connected to DC.
There's clearly something wrong with the design if the transformer has been installed, let alone if it has burnt!

When DC source is applied to DC motor, the rotor starts rotating and the rotating field creates a counter voltage called 'Back emf' (Eb) in the stator winding. This Back emf prevents the motor winding to be short circuited. See these sites for DC motor theory:
For the case of transformer, there is no Back emf and the windings are almost short circuited when DC is applied.
