Stealth moderation

02/23/2011 11:39 AM

I see stealth moderation is in action again, I thought was a suitable response to a totally unintelligible OP, it suddenly got rated 5OT. But before anyone suggests 5 people voted the same happened to the previous post in the same thread. I've spotted it a couple of times in the last week. I gave a GA and that suddenly turned to 5OT

Isn't it up to the members of the board to vote.

Oh, Tony.

Is this the first time Admin has slighted you thus? You could not avoid it forever!

I am wondering if I should vote myself OT, and save Admin the trouble...

There. That should be worth 5 OTs.

Re: Stealth moderation

I make as many rude comments as anyone and probably should be moderated more than I am. ( I'm working on that)

But, I remind myself that we are here at the pleasure of Global Spec. They could just as easily shut this site down and put the Mods. to better use. So, when you get that 5OT, remember it is just a gentle reminder to refocus.

Enjoy the company when it's good and ignore the loonies when they come along.

A GE to lynlynch. Now you are all asking yourself, is this Guest dumb - doesn't this Troll know that it is a GA not a GE? Very good question one might suggest. However upon futher investigation and when one researches the answers provided by a certain Mrs Lynlynch one will quickly determine that the source of the answer is Google and since this is an engineering forum (well supposedly so) then if we combine Google with Engineer the we get GE and this is what Lynlynch is - yes a Google Engineer. Now now doubt but this will be moderated off the face of the planet but not before some people see it.

Your posts are not rude, they are sad reflections on your life.

All the best from a guest !!!!!!!!

I drove by a church about a month ago. They had one of those message signs out in front that said, "Those that anger you, control you". Powerful food for thought.

If Lynlynch is sad because he takes an active interest in all engineering subjects, and, applies his extensive experience, knowledge and intelligence together with an extraordinary ability to route out relevant information from the net in order to help others (OK and sometimes chiding those who can't be bothered to google). Then how sad is someone who stalks his online presence and offers up snide and pointless criticism.

I quite agree. Besides which, you sometimes need to know how to make the best use of google & other search methods, and some people are very good at this.

If I've got a question, I don't care where the answer comes from, or how someone found it, if it answers my question, I'm good to go. If lynlynch happens to come up with the answer, it doesn't matter to me if he had to walk to the library to get it.

If you respond to an OT post (at least one that was self-voted OT), your post inherits that rating unless you uncheck the box to the bottom left.

Re: Stealth moderation

If you don't want to contribute something useful to a thread - don't contribute. The moderation team would appreciate it if you'd not scare off new users with rude comments. Simply asking the OP to provide more information or supplying thoughtfully-worded constructive criticism is more useful than an image that doesn't help. Perhaps that is unintelligible to the OP.

So yes, when the first two replies to a new thread are images or inside jokes that don't answer the question, yes - they might be marked OT. You have the power to do this yourself.

Just out of interest - when a thread is invaded by shall we say an obviously "don't answer the question" poster some 30 times;

Why OT this 104

?

It looks like the response you linked may have been marked off topic because the moderator may have taken it as bordering on an attack on another commenter. It may have been reported as such. You'll notice it has 2 other off topic votes in addition to what you're assuming are 5 from the moderation team. (This is just my best guess without researching the issue - I don't have time right now.)

I am not sure what I want to say about this. From previous posts, you seem to be capable of better moderation than has lately been exercised. Not your fault, so far as I can tell, but there really are opaque figures around here that resemble Franz Kafka"s The Trial. This is a very serious engineering and philosophical deficiency of the forum, and I hope it can be addressed responsively.

Re: Stealth moderation

I'm not sure what I want to say about this. I don't think it is your personal fault, but nonetheless the moderation here seems to be dismally uncognizant of some important issues. Rampant (and really offensive) nonsense regularly gets through with no moderation; but in spite of the provocations, fairly mild responses are suppressed. I can rarely discern any engineering competence in the moderation efforts. Somehow we are supposed to "respect" contributions that themselves have no respect at all for well known physics and engineering concepts. This is on a par of Let's make nice to Idi Amin, Muammar Gaddafi, or any other such worthless blot, because we don't want to "make waves."

Re: Stealth moderation

Can you report or send some examples of the rampant nonsense to the CR4 Admin email? We will review it and take the appropriate action. Reporting anything you find inappropriate/offensive is the best way to ensure that we find it.

The moderation team reviews a lot of content on this site each day - in addition to dealing with user support, spam, and other issues - so it's likely that we will miss some things. We all have "regular jobs", too.

Since the moderators are people, not computers, they all have individual filters and opinions. That's why you may see some differences in what stays up vs. what comes down from day to day. The differences should be subtle, so again, please feel free to use the appropriate venue to contact the CR4 Admin should you see anything that looks out of place and we'll take a second look.

This is for all CR4 users in general:

If a user comes onto CR4 spouting incorrect principles/something you don't agree with you have a few choices:

  1. Ignore it. Invest your time, knowledge, and effort elsewhere.
  2. Constructively join the conversation with some information and proof of why the post is incorrect. Sticking to facts or experience is best. Don't make it personal. (This goes beyond linking to the thread to point to the new "idiot", posting a simple humerous-to-you graphic, or getting into a troll war with the user. As past experience indicates the problem won't be solved.)
  3. Bash the user and make fun of him/her for the stupidity of the post. Ask your friends to join in. Keep poking at the user until he/she finally leaves the site. (This one is a joke. Sadly, we see it all too often.)

The point is that it's difficult to communicate a difference of opinions online. We all know that things can be taken the wrong way when you can't see the visual and other cues of a verbal conversation. Throwing barbs and scarcasm into a post in which you're trying to correct someone (especially when English isn't the first language) isn't going to help it go smoothly.

Please see specifically the thread on Floating Energy Barges. That has to be one of the saddest exercises I've ever seen. I requested several times that some spam-like repetitious posts from one "kastrupsky" (6 in one case, 4 in another) be deleted. To no avail.

I unsubscribed from those threads entirely. Haven't heard a peep. No emails, no problems. Are they still going?

The guy was either highly agitated, or a little off balance. I don't think it required admin to figure that out. The only sad part was watching established members engage him for days on end, feeding the fire.

It has also happened to me, but (to date) has been due to a glitch or glitches in the (inherited) CR4 software. The block has been removed rapidly after private messages or e-mails to Admin.

Re: Stealth moderation

No sense making a mountain out of a mole hill. Everyone here has ideas about what would make this site perfect................for them.

All in all, it's a pretty good bunch here, members, guests and moderators alike. Arguments break out occasionally, but who doesn't ever get in arguments with friends, family, coworkers, etc. It happens.

I would say that CR4 mirrors real life, but overall, I think it's better. Hell, in society now, we need police at high school sporting events to keep parents from killing each other, we need police at school board meetings to prevent parents from killing each other or board members. As bad as anything gets on here, it's far more tame than most stuff on the web, or even real life.

Like the kids would say, "It's all good".

My 2 cents.

Kinda 'inexplicable' that one.

Absolutely nothing but a perfectly reasonable and polite question by you and comprehensive list of possibilities to choose from. There is no context in the question to limit the field - so how could you edit it down?

Or possibly moderation thought you were 'making the poster look stupid' as "every fool knows", IA is Internal Audit and PA is Personal Assistant.

If the moderator thought they knew what IA and PA meant then surely it would have been more useful to tell us than to give you 5 OTs.

As yet we still have no clue.

When I started a thread asking for them to recommend that acronyms are not used I didn't get much support.

http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/53268

EDIT

As an experiment I marked this as Off Topic when I created it and then went back to try to score it off topic again. So you are certainly correct that it was a moderator who had a go at your original very apposite reply.

Did you take the time to create the table of acronyms in this comment: http://cr4.globalspec.com/comment/699253/Re-the-difference-between-IA-and-PA?

If not, it's a violation of copyright. Law limits you to three paragraphs. Technically, the table is not formatted in paragraphs - but that's a lot of content you copied without even citing. The moderator should've removed the comment rather than marking it off topic. He or she actually went easy on you.

Redaction of the tables (plus a word of explanation and possibly a wrist slap) would have been far less perplexing than the off-topic marking.

Not quite 'burden of proof' in this case, Savvy.

The site is openly public domain and includes the invitation to contribute. No over claim is made on these contributions. The assembled lists are contributed 'in spirit' of free unencumbered use.

& technically in law JD c/p'd 2 paragraphs.

Again - If moderators are not qualified on the area of expertise, or have not followed the context, or are unsure of who is 'factually correct', or have not performed the required background research to adjudicate - they should consult before acting
