Guru: ≥ 500 posts, and completely automatic, no matter how good/bad they are. This information is easily available on inspection by any decent observer. You're welcome.

For this forum title you can read at SITE INDICE, right side this windows. In all forums, this or other, the forum will give title to each member according how many post they have sent, and YES, its automatic give. On different forums you'll see different title

GURU word came from Sanskrit language and is Indian. GURU means MASTER. Now just because someone posts >= 500 comments, should not be allowed to graduate to GURU. Like getting PhD may take few years and Nobel prize few in their life time. So one may become a true GURU only by true knowledge, experience. So this automatic designation system gave me wrong picture.

Now that's not really called for, is it, Tornado? We're all brothers and sisters here. The only dumb question is the unasked question.

If you read the entire history of relevant posts, I think you will see that my comment is indeed called for. I realize full well that in the absence of context, it would seem untoward. But, alas, there is plenty of context (and provocation) to justify it. I do not acknowledge brotherhood/sisterhood with discernible fakes.

There is presently a system glitch that is blocking normal posts; hence this back-door work-around.

Re: This is a question to administrators

The meaning does vary around the world, quite a lot.

-----------------

Hindi guru, from Sanskrit guru, from guru-, heavy; see gwer-1 in Indo-European roots.

"weighty" is an alternate translation

Usage applies to knowledge or intellect

--------------

American Heritage dictionary offers;

1. Hinduism & Tibetan Buddhism A personal spiritual teacher.

2.

a. A teacher and guide in spiritual and philosophical matters.

b. A trusted counselor and adviser; a mentor.

3.

a. A recognized leader in a field: the guru of high finance.

b. An acknowledged and influential advocate, as of a movement or idea: "In a culture that worships slimness, he was the Guru of Lean" (Erica Abeel).

----------------------------

Collins offers;

1. (Non-Christian Religions / Hinduism) a Hindu or Sikh religious teacher or leader, giving personal spiritual guidance to his disciples

2. Often derogatory a leader or chief theoretician of a movement, esp a spiritual or religious cult

3. Often facetious a leading authority in a particular field a cricketing guru

--------------------------

Or depending on your geography and culture - the title guru may mean reverence through to derision.

Much as it does in CR4

Once you learn how to properly spell the word "power", you achieve "Guru" status. Very straightforward process.

I think it is "DADAGIRI"- a new word that needs to go into International dictionary.

From the CR4 FAQs;

What do member titles mean?

Member titles are a fun way to track user participation on the site. The more posts you submit to CR4, the higher you'll rise along the following scale:

  • 0 - Browser
  • 1 - 4 Participant
  • 5 - 9 Member
  • 10 - 24 Active Contributor
  • 25 - 54 Associate
  • 55 - 99 Commentator
  • 100 - 499 Power-User
  • 500 - 999999 Guru

Beyond that, we really don't know (and we're kind of scared...).

You must be a registered CR4 member to accrue posts towards user titles. Any actions that you take prior to registering will not be carried over. When you register, you start as a "browser".

Note, user titles in no way reflect the quality of posts provided by an individual, only the number of posts they have provided. A users "Good Answer" total is a better reflection of this.

You may notice a number of folks with titles who are not on this list. They are CR4 Administrators and do not gain rank in this way.

GURU truly means a MASTER, A teacher with lot of knowledge. People like TORNADO who post all kinds of messages should not be graduated to GURU just because he posted 500 messages. Kindly rethink and - may be one who has posted something like more than 10,000 or so good answers - not any kind - good or bad. Idea should be to award the title to a true GURU.

You should really conveying this direct to Admin, if use of the title is a problem.

The members have no influence over who is called what.

The use and other aspects of international interpretation, have been raised before.

I certainty don't care if it/mine is changed.

If you were to require 10,000 GA's for awarding the title Guru, there would be no gurus. The best rates of GA accumulation are around 100/year, so it would take 100 years to become a guru.

This kind of mindlessness in arithmetic and physics is the main reason for the criticisms you are receiving. Ask a foolish question, get a matching answer....

Re: This is a Question to Administrators

I think DIVEKARS idea is a good one. He simply went too far with the "10,000 GA" suggestion. A more realistic number of GAs to achieve certain titles would be appropriate.

But of course, this concept of basing the titles on GAs instead of simply a total of all comments is nothing new. For whatever reasons, the architects of CR4 have chosen the current system. I'm sure thought has been put into it from the very start. Although, in my opinion, the alternate method does have its merits.

And again, Tornado... continuing to refer to members' questions as foolish, is kind of lame. Civility and relative humility are kind of cool concepts.

Okay, so how many GA's to become a Guru?

How many GA's do Del, Anonymous Hero, Lyn, PW, et.al. have?
How many GA's do JRaef, redfred, JohnDG, I, et.al. have?
How many GA's do you and your hero have?

What dog do you have in this fight, anyway?
Once again, please investigate the relevant totality of postings, which you have not yet done.

Wow. Clearly I've hit a nerve. I've no dog, Tornado. No fight, for that matter. I just agree that it's a good idea, although it may be a moot point; as that would require a major restructuring of the entire CR4 system, which is unlikely.

Other than that, I'm just a proponent of civility on online forums.

For the third time, please find and read all the relevant postings. You have completely misidentified the real problems here.

Re: This is a Question to Administrators

There is a member at CR4 that I regard as a Guru. mgaulin is CR4 member #1, and today he has 383 posts. I doubt that any CR4 member (who is paying attention, anyway) would discount a comment from him because he is not ranked as a Guru. If he speaks, you should listen. This is equally applicable to Chris Leonard, who is more active with 1,983 posts.

At this writing, there are 45,728 registered members on this forum. Of them, only 59 members have more than 2,000 posts. By my count there are 207 members with Guru title, and three CR4 Admin with more than 500 posts (perhaps CR4 Admin can confirm these numbers. mgaulin may wish to increase his post count )

It appears that posting to gain Guru status is a non-issue.

I am pleased and honored to be surrounded by such a diverse and generous group of individuals from so many cultures and age groups. This comment extends to you, M S DIVEKAR, as well as all CR4 members and guests. If you wish my Guru title to be rescinded, lobby for it and I will not protest. Like 34point5, I am just here for the ride, and I am enjoying it very much.

Well said!

But it brings to mind the question... I wonder how the number of gurus, and their number of posts, corresponds with the number of lost man-hours. worldwide, by the companies that employ many of us. Not counting, of course, our venerable and respected retired members

In the absence of data, that might be a false accusation. (Though, truth be told, maybe not. )

I'm on temporary disability while healing a shattered kneecap, fortunately not very painful. Thus I have been posting a little more frequently without cutting into work time.

More a pain-in-the-a$$ rather than any real pain. With the splint/brace doodad, I'm ready to audition for Captain Ahab or Rumpelstiltskin, but I can't yet drive or climb ladders, and I have to do stairs always same leg first. Next week I go back to partial duty. Down the road, I have some tendon restretching to do, which may be a bit slow.
