Trying To See If My Airplane Design Idea Will Work

03/05/2011 9:37 PM

I am thinking about making a pedal airplane, i would like to know how many rpm's must the prop (I don't know the prop, any suggestions there?) must spin at to move the aircraft at 5-10 mph. I just want 2 wings connected with just enough space inbetween for me to set and pedal, all i expect to cary is me, im skinny, i weigh around 120, and propobly 10-15 lbs of pedeling equipment, idk how much the wings would weigh, and the propeler, and prob 5 lbs for a landing gear.

i know i can pedal at 40-50 rpms, and i would like to know the gear rations i would need to have

so 120, the wings and prop, and 10-15 lbs of pedeling equipment,

and i want to go around 5-10 mph on a perfect, no wind day, and take off i can be pulled by a car or sumthing

if this is possible let me know, i appreciate it

I think any attempt to explain this would be futile. Sorry.

Sounds like hang gliding with pedals.ds

The basic idea - a man-powered airplane that is towed aloft - makes sense and has even been done (one that can take off on man-power alone is a more difficult proposition). However, propulsion is the very last step in design! You have many other problems to solve first, not the least of which is designing a structure light enough that you can keep it and yourself in the air on about 1/4 horsepower, which is about the maximum that a human can provide continuously.

There is actually a conflict with 'tough enough to be towed aloft' and low HP sustained flight characteristics in terms of structural parameters.

Imagine what would happen to Gossamer Condor or Albatross, if you hooked them up to even a Tiger Moth.

Performance: (D.H.82A - Maximum Loaded Weight) Maximum speed 109 mph (175 km/h) at sea level; cruising speed 90 mph (145 km/h); stalling speed 43 mph (69 km/h); initial rate of climb 673 ft (205.1 m) per minute; climb to 5,000 ft (1524 m) in 9 minutes, climb to 10,000 ft (3048 m) in 23.5 minutes; service ceiling 13,600 ft (4145 m); absolute service ceiling 15,500 ft (4724 m).

I like aeroplanes! And just as the higher powered Tiger Moth has a NES [never exceed speed] the Tiger Moth could not fly slow enough to tow the Condor with out exceeding the Condor NES and prevent the wings folding backward.

Whoa! We're talking about a ground tow here - preferably by a constant-tension winch, but possibly by a few friends pulling ever so gently on tethers with shock cords inserted to take up any snubbing forces. No man-powered aircraft could ever survive aero-tow.

Nor probably as a 'kite launch' - shock chord or not.

You will never ever achieve it, as asking such a question here demonstrates your inability to design and build such a plane.........

Even your question was childish, you did not specify weight, wing area, type of wing design, lift, weight of pilot and a few 1000 other important dimensions.....

Building such a plane is very, very high tech........or it simply won't work!!

Look at the Gossamer Albatross dimensions, it only weighed only 70 lbs without the pilot!!! and it was HUGE, the pilot was a well trained athlete too:-

General characteristics

  • Crew: 1
  • Length: 10.36 m (34.0 ft.)
  • Wingspan: 29.77 m (97.7 ft.)
  • Height: 4.88 m (16.0 ft.)
  • Wing area: 45.34 m^2 (488 ft^2)
  • Empty weight: 32 kg (70 lb)
  • Loaded weight: 97.5 kg (215 lb)
  • Useful load: 65.5 kg (145 lb)

Performance

Go to University for 5 years and you may make it!!

i would rather put a petal to a alternator and let a electric motor propell it.

Totally pointless, a complete waste of energy.....you are not an engineer at all.....or you would know that....
