Pumps in Parallel

03/07/2011 4:36 PM

The original question by UsmanS - I want to ask

1) 1) What are the adverse affects of operating two similar pumps in parallel ?

2) 2) What is the effect on performance and efficiency of pumps after parallel operation when they taken in service individually?

3) 3) Can someone give references?

Wh 4) What are the adverse affects of operating two different but matching pumps in parallel ?

4 added for the fun of it

Detail

Rated capacity of single pump is 60cu.m/hr with discharge pressure of 40Kg/sq.cm

Flow rate required sometimes increase to 67 - 70 cu.m/hr therefore we have to operate another pump in parallel

It is six stage centrifugal pump. I think its sufficient?

Moreover, these pumps are equipped with minimum flow devices with by-pass feature.

We already hashed the dickens out of this during last week.

Dear Friend,

I furnish the details in seriatim of your quiery.

1. No adverse Effect - Technically O.K.

2. DISCHARGE will NOT BE DOUBLE and SHORT-FALL OF DISCHARGE WILL HAPPEN.The Pump which is having LESS PRESSURE DROOP CHARACTER will DELIVER MORE than the other pump with higher PRESSURE DROOP CHARACTER. If the pressure develoed is having considerable difference- the over-all out put will be poor and consume more power.

3. Refer HYDRAULICS BOOK, if you are in India, pl. refer HYDRAULICS book by Dr.JAGADISH LAL. I do not know whether e-book is available. If available, I will post here.

Thanks,
