Compatible Material for Galvanized Pipe

03/20/2011 3:22 AM

We are laying a galvanized carbon steel pipe of 3/4" diameter. What is a the best choice of gate valve material to be used as we cannot find Galvanized steel gate valves.

Doesn't matter. Carbon steel or corrosion resistant steel is fine. If you are using threaded fittings the galvanization will be removed by the threading process. If welding it will be burnt away.

Yep, we use either bronze or carbon steel based on the application.

I think brass and bronze are the most common valve body materials used with galvanized pipe up to 2-inch size. Larger valves might be cast iron or ductile iron.

you should consider the type of fluid inside the pipe...

You didn't say what product would be carried through the pipe, or at what pressure, but would PVC be acceptable? I'm not sure if gate valves are made in PVC anymore, but I know that quarter-turn ball valves are. Also, I believe that gate valves are made in CPVC. Both PVC and CPVC valves are made with either socket/glue ends or threaded ends.

What is in the pipe? What temperature and pressure?

I would just go with the PVC valve.

<...Galvanized Pipe...> is wrong for potable water, though it is fine with non-potable. Potable runs in any combination of WRC[Water Resources Council]-approved materials, such as plastics, cement- or elastomer-lined, copper and its alloys, or stainless steel. One doesn't want corrosion products from inside the galvanised pipe affecting downstream consumers: the iron isn't the problem; the zinc is.
