Suspended Image Projection

03/24/2011 12:09 AM

Neat optical trick:

Dim the lights a bit.

Take a clean, clear wine glass with about a 2" stem.

Turn it upside down on relatively dark surface.

Take your iPhone or any cell phone with about a 2"x3" screen and open a photo on it.

Place the phone face down and sit it on the base of the upside down wine glass and slide it a little bit off center.

The photo in miniature will appear suspended in the interior of the wine glass clearly visible from all angles.

Why?

You may have concave lens in the bowl and a convex lens at the base , on both sides of the stem and the rays of light will strike the side of a whine glass with a small throat.

Yes, but the image is not on the glass sides of the bowl, it is suspended in the center of the air space about an inch from the bottom of the bowl or seems to be, when looked at from every angle and elevation.

Much too early for wine here but I did just try it with my beer can and it didn't work.

I will try it with a wine glass after breakfast

"Place the phone face down and sit it on the base of the upside down wine glass and slide it a little bit off center"

i did. Now trying to get what is left of the wineglass out of you-know-where.

The holographic pic is awesome, takes some doing to see though. As my proctologist said when i had swallowed my glass eye by mistake : "i have looked up thousands of rectums (my word, not his)... but this is the first time one looked right back at me !!! i need this triple scotch, believe me !!!" Need i say...it was 10 AM

Re: Suspended Image Projection

i thought so too....but.... both are allowed apparently

and '****ums' sounds more businesslike to me

i hope you guys do realise the mistake i made...

When the OP said "Place the phone face down and sit it on the base of the upside down wine glass and slide it a little bit off center.", i misunderstood and omitted to read the "it" and sat on the wineglass. Bad English (mine i mean). Must be more careful in future.

129CBRider

Your question is why?

The stem of the glass forms an lens system comprising of a convex lens at the base and a concave lens in the glass.

the side of your glass (where you view the image) is another lens.

If you draw the glass out on scale you can determine where you actually see the image.

The optical illusion is that you think you see it in the glass.

If you place a thin sheet of paper on the base you may have a panoramic image of well lit room. Try it ! (you may have to block out light from the "screen")

What do you see when you place your eye at the base ?

eye at base gives nothing but distortion.

won't project onto surface.

holograph only

I will try as soon as I figure out where I put it, can't seem to locate it this morning....unless secret agents may have broken into my house and stole it to use for secret military research.

Re: Suspended Image Projection

for those who haven't tried it, the image is definetly suspended in the air space as a flat holograph and not on the surface of the glass.

Perhaps light rays travel down the stem, into the sides of the glass bowl and at a point where they are directed to the center of the bowl by the bending qualities of the glass sides of the bowl.

This guy uses glass in his artwork to bend light.
