Windmill Blade Design

03/26/2011 12:25 AM

hi frnds!i m working on a project of contra rotating windmill turbine.i hav got struck on the designing procedure part & which software could be the best to give all inputs and get a proper design.plz help me in finding step by step procedure for designing a windmill blade in contra rotation & if there is any software which can help me out of this..thanks!

LynDoor ™Industries can supply our Veri-foil® BladeMaster 1000. It describes ways to pass gas over a foil and make something move.

You'll want V3.12.123.4.3.55.6 of the current software package, with the 23 patches currently available.

Of course, I'm kidding.

Design Foil would be a good starter software

Yes! There is software readily available! Are you having trouble using Fluent!? With which CFD program are you most familiar!? Where have you run into problems in the design process?

Have you used Excel? It is very good for many design calulations. If you have some knowledge of the subject, you will find the calculator built into Windows to be useful, also.

sir,wt about using gambit software for analyzing blade performance...??&if we put some patches over it will it do any better???i mean on the blade if sum fins type structure is made will it do any better in energy conversion on the other side of the blade?

Yes, good choice.
i mean on the blade if sum fins type structure is made will it do any better in energy conversion on the other side of the blade?
That's what the CFD software will tell you. Depending upon the fins' size and design, the other side of the blade may be affected positively or negatively. The beneficial or detrimental effect will probably change with Reynolds number and angle of attack. In general, any high lift device carries with it an high drag effect, typically decreasing the lift to drag ratio. (In practical terms, you don't see aircraft cruising with their flaps and slats deployed.)

I'd just like to point out that the gains in economical wind energy have been realized by just making things bigger. In free air, tandem propellers or turbines can only give a marginal advantage, and are probably not worth the complication, compared to just a bit more diameter.
