What Type of Files Can Be Downloaded

04/22/2011 9:28 AM

I've tried AutoCAD and Word to insert graphics to explain my previous discussions. Paint is the only one I've found that works, but is obviously very limited graphically.

You might be able do a drawing in AutoCAD, then use PrintScreen to do a screen capture to put the drawing into Paint, then save it as a jpg file for posting.

There doesn't seem to be a list of accepted file formats - .jpg and .gif definitely work, so it's probably best to convert whatever image you want to post to one of these. Use the icon to insert the file in your post.

Usbport's method is good, but you could also consider printing to a "virtual" printer such as MS Document Image Writer.

The are also some very good screen capture programs around, such as Faststone Image Viewer (free download for non-commercial use).

.bmp also works:

True, but to produce the same picture usually .bmp files are much larger and require much more loading time than .jpg files.

Agreed - I was just testing the boundaries.

.jpg, .gif and .bmp - know any others?

Would be nice if this info. was available in FAQs, or when the "Add/Edit Image" box pops up.

I'm sure there's a better way to do this, but I did a drwaing in autocad then took a picture of it and posted the picture.

Try using a .pdf creation utility such as cutepdf to turn whatever you want to post into a .pdf file.

I find these generally post OK.

You might be right. I looked at the post I was thinking of, and the image was a .jpg, not a .pdf.

Old age, amnesia etc at work I guess. My bad, sorry.

As I recall, there are several options in the export menu.

Her is a link to a PDF on the subject

Have you looked at the Autodesk site for answers?

I know someone has mentioned this, but I thought instructions might help if you have never done it before...

This only works in Windows - there is probably a similar technique on Macs?

1. Open the image you want on your screen (in cad or whatever).

2. Hold down the alt button on your keyboard and then press PrtScn (usually sitting up to the right of the f12 button)

...This has now copied the active window (eg the CAD program window) onto your clipboard as a bitmap. (If you don't press alt it copies your entire screen).

3. Open a graphics program - MSPaint is part of windows if you have no other graphics program (click Start>Run then type MSPaint)

4. Save your image somewhere as a jpg or bmp or whatever you want.

5. Upload it to CR4!

Easy - now you can upload images made in any program.

Copying the Autocad drawing and pasting it onto a blank Paint page would do the trick for you.

Lots of good tips so far.

FWIW, I use GIMP (in Windows & Linux) for my general image processing. It's a free (GNU) licensed application. Find it here --> GIMP

It doesn't have a screen capture function but I usually create a new file from an image that was screen captured. It can also save a file in most any format imaginable, including downsized jpeg's that are small for web use. There's no use posting multi-megabyte images to CR4 or anywhere else on the web when a few kbytes is usually sufficient.

P.S. - I think DTP packages are more suited for handling a large variety of graphics. If I remember, there are some freeware packages like this available. One, Open Office, might have better import capabilities. I just haven't investigated this for quite some time.

As a sort of retrospective... Many, many years ago, when I was trying to decide what my first home computer was going to be, I was attracted to the Atari 1040ST. My boss, at the time, ridiculed me for this and called it a "toy" computer; because of the history of the company name and also because there were a lot of games for it. Within a few months he bought Pagemaker for making the manuals to go with our instruments. He wanted to import our Autocad drawings into word. He struggled mightily with DXF and HPGL imports into Word, but couldn't them to work the way he wanted. Back then there was a CAD package available for the Atari called Dynacadd that in many ways, blew the doors off of the current Autocad at the time. I couldn't afford Dynadadd at the time, but I took one of our Autocad drawings from work to my favorite local Atari dealer over the weekend. We imported the drawing into Dynacadd, saved it out to a GEM (vector based file format in the Atari world), then imported it into a DTP package (can't remember which package, but there were 4 good, competitive packages back then) and put some text in front and back of the drawing, to simulate a manual. The following Monday, I casually, showed it to my boss and said, "I'm a bit surprised that we were able to do this on a 'toy' computer, when you can't do it on your PC with Pagemaker." He didn't say anything. I think he was impressed but also angry at the same time.

Those were the good old days...
