Problem Posting Excel Tables

04/21/2011 9:37 AM

The recent software shake-up seems to have removed a useful facility, viz. the ability to copy and paste a table from Excel, and have it appear correctly formatted. This used to be very simple.

Example:

Screen capture:

Result of copy/paste of same table:

X X2-2

1 -1

2 2

3 7

4 14

5 23

Here's a link to a table posted before the changes.

I've tried it in Firefox and IE. Does anyone know if there are any tricks which can make it work? Is it just me/my set-up?

I tried a copy-and-paste, too, and it appears I got the same results as you. I'm using WinXP, Firefox and Excel 2003.

Woops! We did not intend to remove table support but that did happen. I just restored it and things should go back to the way they were.

BTW, just to be clear to everyone, tables are only supported when pasted from somewhere else (Word, Excel, etc), and only the most basic formatting is preserved (table structure, with borders forced on). As it turns out, Firefox has very good built-in table manipulation support, IE has very little, and Chrome has none.

Also FYI to everyone, we do not appreciate it if people abuse tables in their posts; when misused they hamper readability and we'll remove them or the offending post entirely if they cause problems for other users.

Thanks
- Mark

This pasted from clipboard, copied from Excel. Text was centered in the cells, but at least it all came over. I use IE, and I can edit the text in the cells here. Cannot manipulate the gridlines.

Mark, can you tell me what constitutes abuse or misuse of tables?
