Designing a 555-Timer for a Two-Way Alternating Signal

04/11/2007 7:35 AM

Hi friends- please think a duty like 5 AC (window) machine have to be operated for a duration of 2 hours contineously whereas other 5 machines to be kept non operating. After 2 hours the present sets of AC machines are to be stopped and other set of 5 AC machines to be in operation. So I thought of using a timer 555 which will change it's output polarity every after 2 hours once being connected or energised and will continue for days and months. If anybody can give a detail ideas of all the parts to be used and its designs etc then I will be very gratefull. Regards.

Why build? - One can obtain timer devices over-the-counter that will do this when wired into the AC controls.

Look up Omron H3C series of timers. They can be operated in "recycle" mode.

You can buy these over the counter, they will do anything you can imagine. They are fun to tinker with.

I used one to cycle a contol voltage to a charging motor to simulate 40 year life. The device worked perfectly 24 hours a day for two week. Always fired right on time.

I bought my stuff from NEWARK

Friends-I know these are on sale over many counters - but technically to say I am on the way to do an experimental model using microcontroller, touch switch,LCD read outs and all the discreets will be cmos .The stored program will drive the timer. I request you to exchange some of your experiences .

Well, use a 555 set up for a two-hour cycle and a flip-flop which changes state every two hours and make one set of 5 AC's run when Q output is high and make the other set of AC's run when Qnot is high.

Bill- it is a good starting.Well I can think of using a power supply of 5 volt.-InIndia,the supply is at 220 volt.So a step down transformer of 220/7 Volt and a max.5 VA capacity transformer is taken with 7805,capacitors etc as well as a battery to deliver 5 volt and also a charger are to be used. When I will use all these, the size will become a big .Can you think of any alternative to make the size as low as 200 cm 3 max.THANKS.
