I Beam Weight Limit

05/12/2011 1:21 PM

So I'm looking at adding in a track beam for my shop building. I currently have a i-beam hoist that has a 3 ton chain hoist with a trolley on it. If I hang a 30' W6x16 I-beam from the trusses at the point where each truss has a 750 Lb weight point engineered in on top of normal load, with 45 degree bracing upward from beam and pole running to the floor on each end.. The beam would be mounted under each truss at 24" OC and poles are welded and braced. Floor is 4000 PSI, Fiber Reinforced and contact is via 18" square of 1/4" plate steel. What is my max load on mid point of beam given less than 5 degree off axis load? Understand that over all plan must approved and certified before installing, just wanting an idea of how much it will hold.

thanks for any rough estimated guess. Dennis

Probably be cheaper/easier to buy an already engineered/manufactured hoist. It will save you the trouble of hiring another company to certify your design, and you can sleep easy at night knowing that you and your company are not liable if something goes wrong with the hoist or calculations.

It's rated to the weakest link.

GA

Particularly since the OP has not identified what the load on this I beam already is. For all we know this beam might be designed to handle the forces from the rare 30 mph wind from just the right angle on the building. His added 858 henway hoist won't tax this beam until that fateful day when a 35 mph wind comes from just the wrong angle....

Don't forget the beam itself is about 137 henway. This must be added.

Couldn't have done it without KJK/USA, the perfect straight man!

I love the old vaudeville schtick. Funny stuff.

Please have an engineer verify your work, because of the obvious liability issues. You might want to ask your insurance carrier who they would recommend.

For doing the initial "look-see" you can plug the numbers in here:

The load will be distributed (but not equally) among several adjacent trusses, with the truss nearest the load deflecting the most until it reaches its 750-lb limit. Sounds like an interesting study in deflections.

I don't think there is yet enough data to compute this; my wild guess would be between 1 and 2 tons, but not 3. Definitely needs a structural engineer.

Don't forget to check with the hoist and load at all positions. At the center may cause maximum moment in the beam, but at the ends may be the limitation due to the load on the existing trusses.

Last time I looked 6,000 Lb + I-beam + hoist exceeded 750 Lb by a small amount.
