Hands Free Volume Problem

05/13/2011 6:30 AM

Does any one have an explanation for why the volume of a hands free kit varies during normal conversation.

The problem started when a friend who I spoke to in the morning on the way to work, changed his car and it had an inbuilt hands free telephone kit. When I rang him up, he had the radio on, the car would turn the radio down and he would speak. But his voice on every word would start loud and drop off. He found out it didn't happen when the radio was completely turned off. I think it may have been something to do with a feedback control of the volume within the car.

This was ok for a while, but recently it has started happening again, although not consistently. Sometimes it is always clear on every call, then next time I would have to ring him back a couple of times to get good sound.

At his end, he says he can always hear me very clearly and as loud as he wants. I sometimes think it may be something to do with my voice being projected in his car, but when I am quiet and he is speaking it still happens.

His car is a Honda Accord with their inbuilt system. I think about 2003 is the year of manufacture, maybe a little later.

Hi Lyn,

It's unfortunate that Anonymous Poster #1 didn't read CR4 Rules of Conduct

(At the same time, it is important to note that for many users of this site, English is a second language. Therefore, there is no reason to report, highlight, or denigrate grammatical errors, typos, etc.)

Us Brits make allowances for those what don't speak proper English like what we do here in the UK.

I never know when to use the apostrophe or not and who really gives a sh1t.

All the best

John

John,

That's the second time this week I've used that apostrophe incorrectly. Both times it was pointed out to me by someone.

I do not take offense to being corrected, because I try to communicate as clearly as possible.

And besides, I've been know to abuse those who don't communicate clearly when I think they should know better.

I also have become more tolerant of grammar errors since coming to this site, due to the international membership.

Cheers.

It's known, not know.

That's it! That's all the abuse I can tolerate for one day. I think I'll sit on my hands for a while. Spell chack doesn't correct stupidity, I guess.

That made me laugh.

(Meant to mark it off topic but don't seem to be able to edit that now)

Worrier,

A lot of cars have speed sensitive volume built into the stereo system. You can usually turn this feature on and off. You can also choose how much the volume increases and decreases as your speed varies. I would try turning it off and see what happens. Another possibility is that the cell phone may not be 100% compatible with the factory installed hands free system. Good luck. Ed

http://www.dreaded-apostrophe.com/ There. That takes care of Lyn's problem - Sorry, Lyn - looks like we were both wrong!

This sounds to me like an Audio AGC problem. Worrier does'nt (does not) mention the rate of attack, but I infer that the first syllable is normal, the rest at low amplitude. If the same 'phone was used in his friends previous car, then the fault probably lies in the in-built Honda hands-free kit. Look for RF from the cell-phone getting back into the mic. wiring of the kit - loose braiding or earth bonding. I had similar problems with a 100W HF set-up - a real pain in the rear end! 73 G4RZM.
