Normally two types of Steam Turbine Governors are used these days. Type 1 is pure Hydro-Mechanical Type and Type 2 is electronic type.

Electronic type governors are further devided in groups depending upon type of sensors used to pick up the shaft speed. Some of them are prob-pick up type which sense shaft speed directly from the coupling(shaft) and gives feed back to control system to act suitably.

Hydro-Mechanical Governers were one of the most reliable precision machine and still in use at most critical services. Governor is coupled mechanically to the machine depending on the speed and range coupling may be through reducer gear also. The Feedback mechanism is connected between governor and the controlling valve called Tripp and Throatling valves. Action of the governor's servo is amplified through hydraulic system and power piston gives action to feed back mechanism to govern the drive mechanism.

In Electronic Gonernors also similar type of actions takes place the diffence is that in electronic governor, Feed back power piston is connected through Hydro-elctronic convertor. The electronic signals generated by electronic governor are converted to coresponding hydroulic signals which actuates the power piston through pilot mechanism.

Maintenance of both type of governors is an expert's job and need calibration table.
