Multiple Tip Screwdriver Sets

05/17/2011 4:34 PM

I think that most of us have a set or at least a pile of those screwdriver tips which fit into a driver handle 1/4" hex. I like to think I have almost every tool imaginable so when I can't come up with the tool required to resolve an issue I get uncomfortable. One of my most common "couldn't resolve it" issues are when I need a driver/bit combination and I have it but it won't fit into the available space. Today, for example, I went out with what I call my light duty selection of tools. Todays work actually required no tools so the light duty box goes anyway just in case. In that box I have a PROTO multi tip driver set plus a package of every bit imaginable including security types. So while I was visiting at an office today there's an emergency of course and friends who know me come running up asking, John, do you have such and such tool. In todays incident the magnetic locking security door to the CEO's office had developed a problem. In a deeply recessed hole in the support block an allen head screw had been coming loose until it allowed the frame portion of the magnetic assembly to droop down and prohibit the door from closing. I went to my light duty box and got out the driver kit with every bit ever made by the human race, proudly marched back to the door only to find that when I put the allen head fitting onto the driver the driver was too wide to fit in the deeply recessed hole. I had to drive home and find a long body allen key, return to the scene and complete the repair.

When I came home today I started searching the Internet for a GOOD QUALITY set of longer than normal bits. There are lots of them out there but poor quality abounds. Also even some of the better sets stick with the thick, 1/4 hex drive, even up into tiny head types in which case the hole size interferes as in the case above.

What I would like to find is a set of long body bits of every imaginable type including security which also have narrow shafts when the sizes get small and also of high quality tips. Some of those cheap kits have tips which are terrible, off center, and even damaged from the factory.

Can any fellow tool freak help with suggestions.

Best Regards

John

I haven't seen any for 1/4" driver handles, but there are long hex and torx sets for use with socket handles... Google "long hex bit" and you'll find plenty.

Very good example of thinking out of the box, pantaz. Can't be sure if it'll directly appy to the OP's situation, but quite often the simplest solutions are achieved by sending your thoughts at a slight tangent from the most obvious, common and suggested path. GA from me.

Have you looked at some of the flex shaft hex bit drivers? There are a few that may be able to handle the smaller holes.

John - You may have to make your own. You'll need some 1/4 hex 1018 bar (preferred) or anneal some cheap hex bit shanks (still can be a "pita" to drill). Lathe drill center holes (spot, center and drill) sized to a two mil clearance to light push fit for each size hex. Thread the bottom of the 1/4 hex for a long steel hex socket set screw sized to fit the hex key. Put the whole thing together with application of Loctite 603 and appropriate slow cure activator per the instructions on the link below.

http://www.loctite.sg/sea/content_data/93772_603EN.pdf

If you can't find a set screw of the right hex size look for a socket head screw with the right hex. Cut the head off the threaded shank, drill a clearance hole through and silver braze it to the top of the hex shank. You'll probably have to jig it to keep it centered while brazing. Then press the hex key all the way through. Add the loctite and activator per the link instructions.

If you have to get them apart 250-300F will kill the loctite; but won't hurt the temper of the hex forms.

BTW, the WIHA products are high grade tools. Appropriate for a professional.

John

For 1/4 inch bits I have allways used APEX brand. The bits are available in lengths up to 6 inches with most of the length turned down. APEX is a division of the COOPER TOOLS company. I have used these bits for more than 30 years on boeing aircraft repair work.

Regards,

Doug
