Wi-Fi Using Data Card

05/18/2011 3:57 AM

Dear All

Can somebody let me know, whether I can create wi-fi hot spot using data card?

Use a router instead.

I respect your honesty by marking this OT yourself, but I gave you a GA anyway.

Red, I think you are confusing his use of the work "data" with data acquisition cards, he's talking about a wireless card for Internet access, that uses the Cellular network, and can be purchased from the wireless providers, along with the service plan for data access.

Excuse me but I have been known to use irony in my replies more than once. The phrase "wireless card" is probably what the OP meant to write but he didn't. He used only the imprecise phrase "data card". Now all computer cards work with some kind of data but the card type that must include the word "data" to describe it is a data acquisition card. So since others had already answered the likely question, I chose to highlight the imprecision of the question by applying a little irony in my reply. I was never confused, here. Are you confused, now?

it's not wireless.

Dremel makes a wireless version.

Yes you can, I am doing exactly that for my home. I have a Sprint Express data card plugged into a MBR-1000 wireless router. The data card connects to Sprint tower, everyone in house can get online.

Well it depends on the type of data card and your level of programming. If you have an analog data acquisition card then a wi-fi hot spot is out of the question. If you have the correct data card, then you certainly can allow anyone into your computer. But do you really want to do that? I'd make sure that you add some encryption routine to limit peoples access.

Any Sprint data card will work, like the ones sold by Sprint here . It can be plugged into a wireless router like the one here . There is no programming required and everyone in the house can instantly get on line. No one can get into anyone's computer; it is simply a wi-fi hot spot.

Well his question asked if one could use a data card as a wi-fi hot spot. The answer is yes if he employs a wireless router.

And then, following your lead, the answer would be "no" if he didn't.

Yes, that data card will work. But this data card will not work for WI/FI Hot Spot network access. Measurement Computing does a very nice job of designing data acquisition boards for a variety of platforms.

I live just far enough into the boonies that a data card seems to be my only option for internet service,

I have been using a CradlePoint MBR900 wireless router and a verizon USB760 plugged directly into it, with no further setup than that, for about 8 months now and it works just fine.

Loved "still no wifi".

Back on topic ... anyone have any experience using the Virgin Mobile USB sticks plugged into a wireless router? Thanks.

I think those who had something worthwhile to say knew exactly what the OP was talking about and the question has been answered with good links to steer them in the right direction.

You can use a router to create a hot spot, then connect to it with a data card, but a data card only has one port in or out, not multiple ports, so can only talk to another single point, hence the purpose of multiple point routers.

Please clarify: data card means cellular modem or data acquisition card? I could imagine that DD-WRT is able to access the USB port of the router but would love to hear from you about experiments or even open source and hardware pointers. I have some omega USB stick reading voltages and need to plug that into a small WiMax router. thanks
