Spring Comparison

05/20/2011 7:47 AM

Hi,

I am a trainee at a manufacturing company and I have a doubt on which spring is best, leaf spring or coil springs? Which can be advisable a brief comparison on them could be helpful. On the basis of load, dimension, and cost.

regards,

vinay

If you are building pogo sticks or beds I recommend using extra heavy duty leaf springs.

If one were "better" than the other, why would the "worse" type be manufactured?

i was a trainee in a switchgear manufacturing company in 1967. i realised quickly that springs are the most important and least understood components of switchgear.

Obviously, you are in the same boat, whatever your industry is. So, i, an electrical engineer, a reasonably good spring designer, want to help. If you want to help yourself that is.

If you are in Bangalore, i can talk to you one-on-one and impart whatever little i know.

If you are somewhere else, and are sincere in your quest for knowledge, i am willing to send you some stuff so that you can learn a bit.

Do let me know.

Whichever meets the requirements is the best sping. Load and dimension will dictate which spring to choose. If either type spring will work, then cost can be considered.

Just off the top of my head, probably the leaf spring would have more positioning control over the sprung device than a coil spring. The coil would require additional hardware to locate the sprung device.

Sorta-kinda-maybe close?

Re: Spring Comparison

Which is "best" depends on the application - and as you will find, if you do not know already, there are many types of spring other than just "coil" or "leaf" springs, Belleville springs and torsion bars, for example. Even within the "coil" and "leaf" spring families there are important distinctions to be made. Leaf springs for reasons of ruggedness or safety might have "military wrapped" ends and there are many refinements in construction/assembly that will effect their performance. Coil springs can be wound in a way that makes them progressive, and leaf springs can be even more versatile in this regard if they are properly matched with an appropriate shackle and hanger design etc. etc.

It is generally true that coil springs are lighter for the energy they can store, and in some ways they are more compact - this may or not be important. One negative or positive for coil springs, depending on the application, is that they tend to offer no extra stability or support and additional restraint is likely to be needed to ensure that the sprung part holds its position.

which is the best ? depends upon its application.

I would sujjest - before coming to this forum , be matured, try to search books, net etc.

i think you are qualified [by education] in your current job. So be student and gather info. then go to expert you will get in depth of subject. Readymade info like fastfood is not good for your future as a engineer.

There are no stupid questions - rather ask and find out what you were supposed to know than not ask and still remain in the dark.

I think you may have got some better answers if you had taken the time to outline exactly what your company is making......then the advice could be "aimed" better....

if a force of 1000N acting on the body and a suspension is to be used for example a motor vehicle, space is not a constrain, now what spring is selected??

Re: Spring Comparison

Ok, let's say you're designing a 4 wheeled automobile weighing 400kg.

From here on I imagine that you'll need info regarding the use and setup of the vehicle: how much wheel travel is required, how fast must the thing move - how easily will it be to maintain the thing, are there solid axes involved etc?

Let's say you've got all this info and want to properly engineer the answer then you need to figure out things like natural frequency, possible oscillation of sub systems and allot of other things that I know nothing about. Once you've got this info then only can you make an educated decision - maybe a coil spring will oscillate where a leaf will not? - I don't know

If you really don't give a damn about all those and you just need to design a little trolley that some bloke's going to push around in a workshop then use what's available to you and what's cheapest. Don't import a coil if you can buy a leaf at your nearest scrapyard.

But if this is only to settle an argument between a few friends over a beer then (in my opinion):

a) A leaf will give you less travel, will be cheaper to procure (depending where you are), will have a lower load to displacement ratio, will possibly be able to carry heavier loads and requires more horizontal installation space

b) A coil will give you more travel, may be more expensive and will need a more vertical installation space.

Peace out

KPG

GA.

However, i have seen variable-pitch compression springs in automobile suspension, mainly to give a rising force/stroke characteristic i thought, but maybe for damping purpose also.

Vinay, you may want to study the damping part of the pdf i sent to you this morning. Also maybe this link : http://claymore.engineer.gvsu.edu/~peirsonb/misc_egr_files/egr350_report.pdf

Re: Spring Comparison

Considering that a car it suppose to be as light as possible, you might choose the torsion bar, or its derivate, coil spring (which is a little less effective). The reason is that for the same amount of material (same mass), this tip of springs are capable to store more energy, so for your vehicle, this spring it will be lighter then any other. This will improve your car's acceleration, shorten breaking distance, etc.

Sometimes a good answer is good advice and that quite simply is it.

If you are close to a railroad, watch when a train goes by. You will notice the locomotive may have both coil and leaf springs , but the cars will have coil springs. Passenger cars usually used leaf springs and coil springs. The coil springs were to absorb the load and the leaf springs were to provide a comfortable ride. Automobiles follow the same rules.

In europe today few cars, if any at all, use leaf springs anymore.....even the few vans that have a fixed axle still use coils.....
