Is Oven Baking Required for 6mw Alternator Refurbishment?

06/02/2011 9:45 PM

We are currently involved in refurbishing 6mw diesel generators. Would oven baking be required for this or not?

I'm just glad I'm not employing you to do the refurbishment if you have to ask on the Internet for advice. This matter should be covered in the schedule of work to be undertaken.

If moisture has gotten into the windings (low megohm reading), oven baking would be one way to dry them out--and might be required by Code or contract. Another possible way, if permitted, would be to use a suitably sized "motor winding heater"; this is a device that puts low voltage to the motor windings so that they themselves become a heater. It is usually used to prevent condensation in idle motors, but might be adaptable to your task.

Oven baking is certainly required to make cakes.
