Heating Needle

06/07/2011 4:49 PM

I am looking for a heating rod that I can use to heat and maintain at a certain temperature (it depends on my experiments from 95-285 Celsius) on aldrich needle

Z261335 which is about 2 inches in length and 0.6 mm in inner diameter. Any suggestion would be appreciated

Thank you

Sincerely

Ganesh

Check out soldering irons with electronic temperature control.

JohnDG, keepin' it simple!

GA for a common sense answer.

[edit] Oops, I may have been a little early. First ganesh says it is what he wants, but now he says it might be too hot. It's still a common sense approach.

[edit again] Here is a solder/desolder station with a temp range 1220F -8420F.

Thank you for your reply, but soldering irons are in the range of 250 to 450 Celsius, but I am also looking at temperatures from 75 to 300 Celsius, temperature accuracy is mandatory for my experiments since visocity of polymer solutions vary considerably by fractional change in temperature. I am working on multiple polymer solutions each having varying melting points

Jeez - you guys give up easy - you need spoon-feeding!

Go here and check out code 777-91 (temperature range 65-450°C).

PS: You don't have to turn it all the way up!

If you want better, you're probably looking at very expensive bespoke equipment. How's your budget?

I'd be happy to design it for you .

Hey thanks a lot man, I didnt want to give it up that easy man, just that I am not an expert in these. Though budget is not a big constraint, it does to an extent. Products that you sent me the link are well within the budget, maximum I could go is about 200 US Dollars. Note I am just a PhD student and my boss decides the budget

What is the purpose? Are you doing some studies with flow rate or other viscosity dependent variable through this 0.6 mm id needle? The problem is that for such a large L/D ratio keeping the whole length at a uniform temperature will be difficult. You may be better off with enclosing the needle in a hollow cylinder of about 20mm dia and blowing temperature controlled hot air through the casing. Heavy duty hot air guns for 24x7 duty are available from Bombay for about INR 5000. If you want I can give you the contact details.

Build up a closed loop Solder Bath using a Piston Pump,reservoir,on-off bimetallic thermostat, open coil electric heater.

If you are a Ph.D level clever- then you can rig up a Conductive extension ( Aluminum Rod) into where your needle needs heating. Front end of rod will be hetedwith electric heating element--Control by bimetal thermostat . All parts of a domestic iron can be put to good use.
