Automobile Two Wheeler Gearing Arrangement

06/09/2011 1:45 PM

Can anybody tell me....in heavy two wheeler bykes like Karizma, Pulsar 180/200 cc, Royal Enfield.etc, why first gear is taken in front and all remaining gears are taken in rear of our left foot?????

it is also difficult to come in neutral position so why above described system is used in these heavy/powerful two wheeler???????

One down, four up is the shift pattern.

This is how the gearshift pattern was designed.

Go to Google and search "Motorcycle Shift Pattern"

They are many, many informative web-sites to be found there.

KJK/USA is correct, one down/four up.

It is called a sequential gearbox. This allows you to select either first gear or second gear from neutral, but remaining gears must be selected in order.

In the good old days when we had a British motor cycle industry the gear change was on the right and it was 1 up and 2 down or 3 down, 5 speed gearboxes were rare as there was plenty of torque in the old "sloggers" then.
