Lighting Calculations in Tunnel

06/13/2011 8:09 AM

How can i calculate the lighting requirements inside a tunnel. The Indian Standard norms specify that a minimum of 10 lux has to be maintained inside the tunnel. Now i need to calculate the lighting requirements inside the tunnel. The installation has to be done when the tunnel is still in progress. Only LED lights are to be used and also please brief the power distribution for them. Any help is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Would you want a lighting engineer to design a highway bridge?

Would you want a lighting engineer to design the transmission for an automobile?

Would you want a lighting engineer to write the software for an iPhone interface?

Of course not.

So if you are not a lighting engineer, why do you think you have the expertise to design the lighting for a tunnel? If you make a mistake the installation would have to be removed and replaced at additional expense.

Hire a lighting engineer!

Having read your following post it's more than obvious you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

Try elsewhere if you want an answer.

As the lads have said you should not be designing something you do not know anything about.

There is alot more to lighting design than you may realize.

Dialux/Relux software can be used to simulate/calculate lighting levels.

I do not think LED lighting would be the best solution for tunnel lighting (just my opinion).

If you are experimenting with lighting design software, beware of glare, uniformity levels, colour rendering, surface reflectances etc.

I would also check to see if in fact you have a seperate sett of regulations governing tunnel illumination in India.

Depending on your choice of luminaire you should also provide a degree of indirect illumination to eliminate "tunnel effect".

Power distribution will really depend on the layout of the containment system installed.

I need it for the preliminary planning and i wouldn't design it completely. I just want to calculate the power requirements and the number of fixtures.

I ve tried using the Dialux software but it seems difficult to calculate the requirement for tunnels.

So please help me in determining the number of fixtures and the LED light sizes.

There are simply too many unknown factors.

What are the tunnel dimensions, its shape, the color and finish of the wall(s) and the roadway surface, the locations for the lamps and the clearance for the lamps? Also, what are the costs in terms of money and time? What kind of traffic control and warning signage do you need? And so forth. You need to hire a professional who knows how to asses your situation, ask the right questions and provide you with a set of options.

The tunnel dimensions are 15.6 diameter and horse shoe shaped. The finish is shotcreted (after excavation lining with concrete) and the roadway surface, the locations for the lamps are 3m from grade on the sides. Movement of few vehicles and some people is required.
