Power Plant Condensate Pump

06/15/2011 9:11 PM

Dear all,

Please help me to understand the following:

In the P&ID of a condensate pump, there is a pipeline from the pump casing back to the upper part of the condenser (there is another separate pipeline for minimum circulation flow). Could someone please expain the function of this pipeline.

Thanks!

One purpose it could serve is venting vapor from the pump, allowing condensate to enter the pump before starting it.

That's right, condensate pump suction operates at vacuum conditions handling saturated liquid, any vapor formation and in-lakeges from pumps seals needs to be vented back to consdenser on continuous basis.

Venting the flash steam that will develop after 80C and as Tornodo said.

I believe it is for steam turbine flexible exhaust boot cooling.

If the min circulation line you refer to, is from the discharge line ( and not from the casing) then I may attempt to answer.

Condensate pumps in power plants operaes with vacumme in the condenser. The line from casing to condenser help in intial venting of pump while starting. Some vapours may form initially which if not vented from the casing may cause vaapour lock in the pump and pump may fail to pump the fluid.

Minimum circulation line is from the discharge of the pump, which is used initially to develop full pressure of the pump discharge at which main check valve gets opened allowing discharge of condensate and to avoid high shut off pressure of the pump in case of closed discharge valve while pump is in operation.

It may also serve a purpose ensuring the pump will not run dry of condensates.
