Solenoid Valve Specifications

06/16/2011 5:42 AM

Dear All,

With respect to the subject, Solenoid valve is compleately new for me. I just know the basic working principle of solenoid valve. when i am reviewing the data sheets i came across foloowing words.

1.Single solenoid & Deenerize close

2.Duel solenoid & Energize open/close.

3. 3/2 & 5/2 direct operated and Pilot operated.

what does 3/2 and 5/2 indicates?

what is the difference between direct operated and pilot operated.

I Kindly request any one to clarify my doubts.

Regards,

Rakesh

Re: Queries on Solenoid Valves

Hi RAKESH REDDY,

3/2 is 3 ports 2 position (open or closed)

5/2 is 5 ports 2 position (used to operate a double acting valve or cylinder)

Direct operated is where the solenoid armature directly opens the valve orifice or pushes the spool across in a 5/2 valve.

Pilot operated is where the solenoid armature opens the air orifice and the air opens the valve, or moves the spool, in the case of the 5/2 valve.

Hope this helps,

John

Queries on Solenoid Valves

06/16/2011 6:13 AM

Hi john,

Thank you very much for your valuble answer.

Pls also explain me where this 3 port and 5 port applicable. i mean ,as you said one is either solenoid may open or the pilot. then y the port numbers getting increased.

One more doubt sir, if solenoid can directly open valve orifice why should we go for pilot operation? is there any pressure criteria or based on service or any other factor ? kindly explain.

Regards,

Rakesh.

3-port is for a single-acting actuator; 5-port is for double-acting.

Pilot operation is for when the solenoid is so large that the coil itself is insufficiently powerful to operate the valve; the pilot valve brings an air supply onto the valve actuator to operate it, and the solenoid operates the pilot valve.

Best to get diagrams from suppliers on the internet. That will show you how the ports are connected in energised and de-energised states.

Cheers.........Codey

Hi RAKESH,

Single solenoid valves have to be kept energised to operate them against a return spring, where as, double solenoid valves only need a pulse signal to operate them and a different pulse signal to reset them.

Best regards,

John

Another type of dual solenoid valve can have a neutral position, with one solenoid for motion in one direction and a second solenoid for the opposite direction. (Such as forward/reverse on a motor, or extend/retract on a cylinder.)

Hi Tornado,

That would be a 5/3 function valve with the option of Closed Centre, Open Centre or Pressure Applied, in the mid position.

(For our OPs information, not yours.)

Best regards,

John
