Electrical

06/16/2011 12:34 PM

I am looking for a way to automatically start and stop a 2horsepower 380v AC water pump supplying water to a reservoir 1000m away.

Thanks,

JS

Just to clarify. You basically are just wanting a switch rated for 380 VAC that starts and stops on like a timer system? Or you turn it on and it shuts off after a certain time (like a relay)? Or you start, and stop it manually via this switch? Or this switch turns on/off the pump based on something physically happening in the reservoir?

It's called a "Motor Starter".

But is your problem that you want to turn it on and off from 1kM away? And can we assume you don't already have some sort of telemetry system and that's what you are looking for? Please elaborate, the words are free here, not limited to 146 characters (or whatever it is).

OK. Using what kind of level switch? And what sort of cables are in use between those two points? Or is it some other kind of signal transmission device - string/fibre-optic/hawser, what?

Easy enough to do. But you don't tell us what will trigger your automatic stop/start. Timer, floatswitch, or what?

No need to SHOUT.

So there is a pressure switch in the bottom of the tank. Fine. Now is needed a signal transmission facility between the switch and the pump. Please describe what it is.

Don't hold back - words are free-of-charge here.

If the pump is at a lower elevation than the reservoir, there might be a cute way to use the pump discharge pipe to receive information about the reservoir level, without having to run any remote wiring.

Put a check valve close to the pump (maybe a foot valve is already present), and a pressure transducer tapped just after the check valve. When the pump is idle, as the reservoir level drops, so will also drop the pressure measured by the transducer. This can signal the pump to start. When the pump starts, the pressure will rise rapidly according to pipe friction losses; this can establish a new baseline. As the reservoir fills, the pressure will slowly rise further according to the additional head against which the pump is working. When this additional head matches the desired full depth on the reservoir, this can signal the pump to shut off.
