Is This A Code Violation

06/19/2011 6:17 AM

Hi all,

I want to ask if it is a code violation by welding a lug on a B16.5 flange for rigging?

And on an unrelated note, I believed that it is not allowed to modify a fitting in any ways, meaning that one can not 'cut' or add things on a fitting. But I have seen there are many instances on site where one does modify a fitting, an example which came to mind are those 45 deg elbows which are 'trimmed to fit', I believe it is a fairly common practice, but is it also a code violation?

Thanks all.

If the lug is temporary, no. If permanent, it needs to be tested for 2.5 (I think) x the design load on the lug. If it is a violation, the inspector should pick it up during inspection. The lug needs to be installed to suit the load and the direction of the load.

Why not skip the welding and simply rig it via a shackle through a bolt hole?

You can do what you need for welding any attachments into any standard fitting and/or flanges, taking into consideration the compatibility of welded components as per AWS & PQR to comply with the design code, and this will not considered a code violation.

You can modify any standard elbow (45o, 90o, 180o) to get an elbow with 15o or less for example, and this will not considered a code violation.

Also, you can weld a lifting lug into a pipe, elbow, flange, ... etc. without any consideration to code violation.

Thank you all for your opinions!

I do agree that the idea behind the welding a lifting on a fitting is okay when the proper welding procedures are used and there are adequate integrity in the fitting to support its weight during lifting procedures.

But What about the modifying of the fittings. e.g. trimming 45 deg elbows to suit pipes and welding two tees to form a four way fitting, I believe that both practices are fairly common in industries? But if one were to cut and change the fittings, that will have changed the initial design intent, and the integrity of the modified fittings are unknown unless detailed analysis are performed. But does the code address this issue by prohibiting the modifications of any fittings?
