Dispense Items

06/29/2011 12:03 AM

I would like to dispense solid items in a pre-determined space, by rotary movement. I envison an attachment to the container of the items - 2 inches in diameter. It will have two portions to it; the fixed top-portion and the movable bottom portion. The top-portion 'to collect' the items to be dispensed. When the bottom portion is given a half or two-third turn the items will fall into your hand. When dispensing is done and bottom portion released, by spring action it will go back to place of rest.

Can someone give me pointers to build or do build it for me.

Like an apple stem? (Sort of a Mother Nature twist-and-release.)

There are many types of quarter-turn latches, such as used on control panel doors. A design like that should be pretty easily adaptable to your application.

I used to know a few brand names, but now I forget. McMaster-Carr probably has a few, or just search on "quarter turn latches." If the weight is light, even stick-on Velcro® circles might work.

You may need to build in some vibration to make sure your items don't get stuck.
Maybe try a search for indexing mechanisms?

It will also depend on the nature/shape of the solid item and the rate of removal

These are still around, fairly foolproof and OK for slow moving manual dispensing.

GA Bob! Beat me to it!

All those gumball, cashew/pistachio, toy ball dispensers have a similar mechanism, AFAIK.
