Post Editing Problem

06/29/2011 2:40 AM

When replying to other posts, or editing my own, I have recently been unable to select text and apply effects such as italics, superscripts (exponents), etc. I can only position the cursor and delete/replace individual characters.

Anyone else?

Problem with my browser, or problem within CR4 reply window?

Within my own posts, such as this one, there is no problem.

Testing.

I haven't edited a post for a while, so I'm going to post this, then go back to edit. Await results. FWIW, I'm using Firefox.

Superscript. Subscript. Italics. Bold. Underline.

Conclusion: No problem with CR4 - what's your browser?

IE9. (And now I was able to highlight "IE9" and apply the effects that were missing earlier.) Maybe it's just one of those momentary glitches, but in another thread I couldn't make e + 1 = 0 come out right. Ya got me.

Neither of my cats was walking on the keyboard at the time, but I suppose that could do it....

"... I couldn't make e + 1 = 0 come out right..." - maybe IE9 isn't Euler-aware .

I used to be able to do it before, and apparently now again, but for a few posts the select-and-edit function just went haywire. Mystery.

Just to jump in and confirm, I am not having any unusual problems with formatting posts on CR4, but there are a few things that seem to be anomalies on CR4. I'm trying to remember them--one of them is something like this (iirc):

(again, iirc) I tried to italicize a section of text that (iirc) contained a link (formatted with the CR4 link tool--the icon with a globe and a link of chain in front of it). It showed up in italics when I formatted it, and, iirc, it still showed up in italics when I did a preview, but, when I actually submitted the message, the italic formatting disappeared.

I tried it several times, finally gave up. (I may be misremembering what combination of formatting caused the problem--it was definitely italics and I think it was combined with a link, but I could be misremembering the part about it being a link--otoh, I don't know what else it would have been--I've never submitted a picture--oh, I guess it could have been italics combined with a bulleted list item...

I could try again, but I won't atm. ;-)

I have had this problem before a couple of times. But it went away after awhile. I use IE9 as well. Checking...

e + 1 = 0

Yup, Euler-aware! But then any browser should be.

I've been having a similar problem with IE9 with my home computer. About the first ten lines of text can be bold, italics, underlined, or any other editing feature. After that I cannot select any words for modification or linking using the CR4 editor. Another annoying thing I've found of using IE9 with the CR4 editor, I must keep the editing box in the lower half of my screen. If I don't do this when I try to add an emoticon, special character or just do a spell check, the pop-up screens appear far below the viewing area.

I'm certain that this is a compliance issue of IE9 in some fashion with the hypertext standard and not of CR4. One of these days Microsquish may get their act right but if they follow their previous patterns they will make more glitches for every fix or they will just acquire the software that works better than theirs. Sometimes they even pay for those acquisitions.

By times...

I have noticed that while editing or entering a response, it has happened during both events, the "delete" key seems to no longer work and only the backspace key can be used to remove no longer wanted text. When it happens, the cursor also disappears.

Nope. It's not IE9. I have IE8 and it began happening intermittently maybe a week or so ago. Appears random. Or at least I haven't been able to find a pattern. Although I haven't really applied any DOE to it. It's not happening at the moment. I'd say maybe 25% to 40% of the time.

All browsers have their little quirks, and not all of them work equally well with the CR4 reply window. Firefox and Camino give me the little editing toolbar; Safari and Opera do not, so they require the use of manually inserted tags. Since I use OS X, there is no longer a current IE version available, but on another office PC running XP Pro, SP3, Internet Explorer 8 works fine.

I have never used IE 9, but my experience with Microsoft software has been, that if the current version of an application causes problems, reverting to the previous one almost always fixes them. Good luck!

Thanks to all for comparing notes. The glitch seems to have been temporary.

Nevertheless, Euler would have preferred this to the CR4 fonts...

Dies ist bestimmt besser!

Hmmmmm, do you think it might have been caused by mischevous, transient, electronic nuisances?

Could they possibly have been "computergiests"?...

Or, was it due to the (operating system running in the background) ?
