Use of Silcon Gel Sheets for Treating Scars

06/30/2011 9:19 AM

A scratch on knee after a minor accident was completely heeled. But after 2 months that healed portion stared rising and was too soft. With a small cut the watery substance was removed and in few days again it was healed. After a 2 Weeks again it started rising but this time it was hard. Now instead of surgeon I consulted Dermatologist who had put an injection at a corner of scar and advised to use an ointment 'Strataderm gel' and use of 'Silicon Gel Sheet'.

When I googled this matter, many places I found that no any ointment should be used with 'Silicon Gel Sheet'. the ointment suggested is very expensive. Can some one advise me on this matter.

" Consult a doctor. We don't give medical advice." This is the BioMech and BioMed Section and this member has already consulted a doctor and a dermatologist. Read the question. I think that there is nothing wrong with the enquiry; some helpful suggestions may be generated; someone out there may have had similar experiences and I am confident that pritam won't blindly follow any advice given here.

Please feel free to give all the medical advice you are qualified to dispense. I suspect that would be zero.

I read the question. You should read the rules and FAQ's.

I never tried to give any medical advice; I merely tried to mitigate your arrogance towards another contributor, but it is apparent that it was a waste of time. Excuse me for treading on your painful toe, guru lyn, but I suspect that you should also see a doctor, read the original question and my response properly, and don't forget to also read the instruction of whatever he/she prescribes for your toe.

Consult a doctor

That's medical advice. It's apparent that you have nothing of value to add, so why are you here? You are quick to judge others who may have experience related to the problem. I don't blame him for wanting some advice from some intelligent people instead of getting ripped off by another doctor. For the price of one visit he could buy several medical books. That's my advice.

Google what the gel is and what it's for.

When I googled this matter

Second para of my OP starts with the above phrase. I expected expert comments from bioMedical field or similar experiences by others. Unfortunately I didn't get any.

Thanks PaulS for supporting me.

You are welcome. At a guess, the first healing may have been incomplete and some separation may have occurred below tissue surface. Deep damage may have been superficially healed, giving you a false sense of security. I ruptured a scar on myself, thinking that it was fully healed just because it looked good, while club wrestling. The second time around it created a raised, hard and itchy keloid scar. Apparently some skin types are more prone to these. I later learned from a good friend in the medical profession, that depending on age, a cut which separates all the layers of epidermis can take 9 months or even longer to reach the strength of anything close to the original healthy skin. Keep in mind that the knee moves all the time; the hardening may be due to secondary healing of deeper layers, and the fluid may have been ejection of contaminants.

The healing process tends to take place in prioritized stages; covering the wound is the most urgent and it happens quickest, then the body/mind preforms slower and deeper tasks.

The advice received from the dermatologist would be sound, and maybe you could ask him/her more specifically about your case; sometimes doctors just want to get on with their job, but some of them neglect to properly inform their patients. My keloid scar diminished in size after some years, but some scars have to be surgically reduced after some time. Provided there is no infection, and a doctor or dermatologist will be able to tell you if there is, it may just be a question of time to heal.

To be clear to all in this forum: this is NOT meant to be taken as medical advice.

Your last line, is right on the money...

with reference to the treatment of scars check out the link below for "Bio oil", I used it earlier this year, the small red scar left after the operation has now GONE!!

http://www.bio-oil.com/en-us/

Medical Disclaimer please note: I am not a medical professional the link I offer in this post is by way of a personal recommendation of the product, as I found this product worked for me. My recommendation is not to be taken as medical advice over and above that of a fully qualified medical professional.

If you would have google it you would have found it's not an ointment. It's another product similar to the silicone gel sheet. It just drys into one. Maybe the doctor thought the added protection might help.

How many doctors do you see on-line sight unseen by them? I do not know another doctor that in giving a second opinion would not want to see you first. That's what you are asking medical advice with out seeing the patient. Primum non nocere I would like to think we as a community will honor that motto

Just because there is a Biomedical section does not mean all those in the field are doctors. And those that are doctors may have never seen a patient. May done research all their lives.

You went to a doctor he gave you advice. If you have questions about that you should ask him. He is the expert. If your not happy with his advice see another doctor.

Good information & you are right. And as suggested by paulS, when today I visited my doctor again, I put this querry to himself. He happilly clarified that "it looks like an ointment but it is a gel & similar to silicon gel sheet. We can use silicone gel sheet directly. But as after every 1 to 2 days we have to remove it, wash with soap, dry it and use it again, the other gel in the tube is for improving its efficacy. The gel is to be thinly applied on washed & dry surface of scar and allowed to be dried for 3-5 minutes and thereafter silicon gelsheet is to be put."

Thanks all for useful tips and comments.

The alternative spelling "silicone gel sheets" might give better search results, although sanding down a scar could maybe work in some cases.

Maybe this is what the doctor was referring to:

http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/dermatix-silicon-gel_1_6446.html

It seems to be used for healing scars. Perhaps, after applying, it forms a thin 'sheet'? Get further advice on that.

Steve.

In the days before families became fragmented and neighbours became strangers, this is the kind of thing that would be discussed over the backyard fence.

Nowadays we have the internet, and excellent fora like this one is a replacement for that kind of friendship, not a replacement for medical advice.

SO. I heard long ago that a burns unit in Birmingham was using thin slices of potato skin to keep burned tissue sterile and to promote healing. Googling potato and healing brings up some interesting scar healing properties.

I know; 'Old wives tale'.

I wish I had listened to those old wives telling me that running bathwater through a stocking full of oats causes the exczema on the bather to stop itching.

Interesting. The common oat (avena sativa) appears to be used in many skin care products. I know of one (Aveeno) that appears beneficial to some sufferers. I reckon that some pharmaceutical companies play on 'old wives' tales' by suggesting to the public that remedies can be efficaceous, whilst some reap (sorry) the benefit of those same stories by studying and then acting upon them (willow, salycilic acid, aspirin is one possible example).

It must be an fascinating field of study.

I have experience in this and we use plant enzymes to treat scar tissue in a very safe and most times effective manner. The one I use is Vitalzyme brand and it is very effective on scar tissue both internal and external. You may want to consult your health care professional and hopefully they have some knowledge of enzymes and their uses. I have always used it internally but it may be possible to use it topically with a binder such as coconut oil and maybe some DMSO for penetration. Even the coconut oil may address your issues by itself, we have found it an amazing substance full of nutrients.

Is that high or low or normal. I'm not a medic so that tells me nothing. It's just that I know that people with diabetes have problems with healing, That's all.
